Calling anyone interested in medieval Ireland (especially Dublin). Published this week by @FourCourtsPress and edited by Sean Duffy, Medieval Dublin XVII. Seek it out. And don't be put off by my article. Thanks to everyone concerned in publishing this terrific volume.
The decoration on fol. 4v, four running hares with shared ears forming a square frame, is an image found in other medieval manuscripts (below is one from MS. Auct. D. 2. 8). It's sometimes called a 'rosette of hares', but we prefer 'HareSquare' #HareSquare.
The scribes who worked on the #BookofKells applied their pigments with great creativity, as pure colour and sometimes in opaque, translucent layers.
