If AI makes code cheap - the 'promised land' is that every shitty software experience you have had (airlines, hotels, tax filing, healthcare - all the 'trad' industries who treat 'IT' as cost center), can get so much better.

I feel so sad that the first step that is happening because of AI is that great software products like Github are turning into those products.

There is no world, even in the promised AGI land, where AI companies will overlord us and earns billions and billions of dollars, while every software infrastructure around us is unreliable and broken. This tide needs to reverse.

I do not know the path it will take to reverse.
a) either we "slow the fuck down" (as @badlogicgames says) and get more thoughtful and reduce the slop a bit and fix the slop before we commit every piece of code

b) or; as ai/acc and "believers" and folks like @bcherny say - the model 6 months away is always going to fix the problems of today's model, and truly, without humans in the loop, the models themselves will set the tide right

I don't know which way the tide will flow, but I do know that the situation where all software is getting slightly more shitty every passing week will have to reverse for AGI to happen. The models and the inference is only a tiny piece of the puzzle. Today the biggest amount of value capture in AI is happening when these models run in agentic loops and perform actions across complex and diverse software systems. Models will *NOT* replace operating systems. Models will not replace the fact that there will be databases (of everything - tax records, health records, banking transactions) and that these databases will talk to each other.
Models itself, without the rest of the software stack, will not magically get cabs to your door, or food to your home or stream videos and music to your phone and TV.

Quantity of 'software' and 'code' is going to increase, without doubt, in the next 5 years, at a pace we have never seen before. What I am sure off is that trading off quality for that quantity is not how AGI is going to be achieved. How will we hold the bar? Path a or b, that I have no answer for. Every major 1.0 version bump of models changes all our priors on that question every few months anyway.
