The Election Commission of India is under fire like never before.
The SIR has struck 13 crore names off draft rolls, putting the EC at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t.
HOWEVER, what nobody knew: through that same period, some of the sharpest questions were being asked from inside.
Out today, after months of work. Our #ExpressInvestigation 🧵

West Bengal offers perhaps the clearest picture of what SIR actually means in practice. Yet the terminology, numbers and outcomes are so complicated that they remain largely inaccessible to ordinary citizens.
Sabar Institute has published a short and accessible factsheet that cuts through this complexity and helps readers understand the scale and implications of the exercise.
This research has been carried out as a crowdfunded public-interest initiative. Collecting, processing and analysing electoral data at this scale requires substantial time, technical infrastructure and human effort. If you find this work useful and believe that independent, accessible research on electoral processes should continue, please consider supporting Sabar Institute through a donation.
Every contribution helps us keep this work independent and publicly accessible.
Link to the factsheet and donation details in the next post.

Who was left out of the SIR draft voter list in ACs of Kolkata?
Across most assembly constituencies, non-Muslims have been excluded in much larger numbers than Muslims
This challenges the narrative that SIR exclusions are primarily about the supposed "Muslims infiltrators"
Sabar Institute is currently analyzing data from the remaining ACs and will publish the findings here shortly. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to stay informed about the latest updates

India was among the first few countries in the world to recognise Palestine as a state in November, 1988.
At the time, and in fact, all along the valiant struggle of the Palestinian people, we showed the world the way by standing for what was right and upholding the values of humanity and justice on the international stage.
Australia, Canada and the UK have only just followed suit, 37 years too late.
And here we are now…our policy towards Palestine in the last twenty months has been nothing less than shameful and devoid of moral rectitude. It’s a sad diminishment of a previously courageous stand.
“Rivers of blood.” Entire families burned alive. 350,000 displaced since Nov 2023.
This @UNHumanRights report finally exposes horrifying details of genocidal massacres by the #ArakanArmy against #Rohingya in #Rakhine - and calls for referral to the @IntlCrimCourt.
The perpetrators must be held accountable and the international community must deliver the protection it promised in 2017. https://t.co/szoPRVBiOb

Shocking: India just deported 40 Rohingya refugees by dumping them in the Andaman Sea, asking them to swim to Myanmar.
Vineet Bhalla spoke to Myanmar's civilian government in exile, which confirmed the incident.

Bangladeshi media: India dropped 78 undocumented persons in the Sunderbans area in western Bangladesh. Later rescued by 🇧🇩 coast guard. Some showed signs of physical assault & hunger.
This comes after reports of India leaving Rohingya refugees at sea.

A major fire swept through the #Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh 🇧🇩, killing one child.
The government of Bangladesh should allow refugees to build more permanent structures and home that are less fire prone.
