@bizteachroz@1goodtern You are right and everyone else is wrong. I often am the only person masking, wherever I am. Even if the infection rate is low, we don't contribute when inevitably it rises again. We are helping to protect people from more infections. Good for you. I wish it wasn't so lonely.
The beauty of symbiosis in nature 🧵
1. The thinner tree was cut down years ago, and the larger one has been supporting and feeding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn. This natural phenomenon is known as inosculation.
Now that I'm older, I think with relief of my eventual death. When I think of what the world is facing, I feel that I am being selfish. The thought is just ... comforting, that is all.
In my 40 year career in Massachusetts technology companies, I saw massive layoffs and so-called "creative destruction." I've also seen clergy leave a call, and the ending of a good status quo.
Yes, destruction frees up new possibilities, but the purpose has to be justifiable. The
I'm the only person who masks consistently at church, but someone just told me his child has had strep three times in the past year.
That. Is. Not. Normal.
I read posts by actual scientists, and their ideas may change. Currently it appears that COVID damages our immune systems.
I've taken to dehydrating fruits and vegetables because I think there will be shortages and food riots in six months. I want the dehydrated food to tide me over if the store is too dangerous to go to, or short of supplies. Only short-term, though.
Lord, have mercy.
It is odd to see the Episcopal Church extolled or referred to admiringly, when I am so bathed in decades of self-flagellation as well as derision from outsiders.
Let us be humble about our failings, but joyful about the gifts God has given us.
My friend's child has had strep throat three times this year. I read that some people believe that COVID damages the immune system, making other infections more likely. I don't know if my friend's child has had COVID and we're not close enough for me to ask. I pray for her.
we were on an upward curve of exploitation of natural resources and wealth generation. Will we be able to build our way out of this new pandemic, when it happens?
Some epidemiologists have been saying that H5N1 does not pose much threat; they don't think it will develop human-to-human transmission. But others say it is only a matter of time.
How long will such an epidemic take? What will happen to our food and medical systems? In 1918,
40 years ago, my aunt and uncle asked for a particular book, which their daughter dutifully gave them for Christmas: Final Exit. They were reassured by having it, but lived out their natural lives even though they were greatly debilitated at the end.
I've just gotten my copy.
My MAGA neighbor is angry at Bishop Budde for her sermon. I can't understand it!
It's absolutely correct that if you put Jesus' words into modern-day conversational English, many American Christians would revile them -- ESPECIALLY if a woman says them.
@benjamindcrosby@dwaldenwrites that my fellow progressive churchpeople often refuse to acknowledge this.
Conservatism is no refuge. They just have different forms of depravity.
@benjamindcrosby@dwaldenwrites I used to believe the rhetoric that I grew up with (1960s and 70s): If people could just be free, without shame, everything would be great, because people's impulses would be healthy and not harmful.
There was no recognition that many impulses are degraded. It discourages me
It is cruel to shut out people who had plane tickets in their hands. They had been officially vetted and accepted as refugees. What is the benefit of abandoning them?
The cruelty seems to be the point. My country used to offer better arguments for the things it did.
75% of immigrant farm workers didn’t show up yesterday in Bakersfield because of fears of ICE raids under the new presidency.
America’s rural and agricultural regions will be the hardest hit from Trump’s immigration policies. Food prices are going to skyrocket.
