The social media ban for under-16s poses all manner of practical and moral questions. A primary concern is that the Government intends to give the vote to under-16s while, under the ban, preventing them from accessing key content that could help them make an informed decision at the ballot box.

Social media is often compared to cigarettes and alcohol — two things that children are prohibited from accessing.

There is an interesting philosophical argument about the age at which someone acquires the full suite of rights that comes with maturity, including the right to free speech.

On top of that, there are significant inconsistencies in what the Government considers appropriate for children aged 16 and under. One of the most striking examples is puberty blockers.

How can a 15-year-old be trusted to embark on an irreversible medical pathway but not be trusted to access social media?

All this was final declared mid this year.
