I visited Sheikhpura district a few days ago and learned something interesting... It produces onions that are in high demand esp in neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, where non veg food is quite popular.

The onions grown in Sheikhpura are known for their reddish colour, distinct strong taste & medium size.

A few years ago, I travelled to Bhavnagar in Gujarat for a friend’s wedding. She often mentioned that her father was a businessman... but never told that the family was involved in the onion business. They owned a few factories related to onion dehydration.

Mahuva, a town in Bhavnagar, is famous as the “Onion Dehydration Hub of India”. This place is the global hub of supplying processed onion products, particularly to Europe, USA & Middle East.

The industries there are involved in producing dehydrated onion (flakes and powder), fried onions, onion kibbles /chips, onion powder and granules, pickled onions and so on. This small place contributes approx 80-90% of India’s total dehydrated onion production.

In contrast, farmers in Bihar mainly sell fresh onions, which often face unpredictable price changes. There is a clear opportunity for new onion dehydration projects here. There exists a ready market.

The B2B market is massive... Instant noodle tastemakers, spice blends, ready-to-eat meals, fast food chains (for pizza toppings & sauces) prefer flakes/powder for consistency and ease of storage.

Starting such a business is not very difficult... Requires modest investment. Financial/banking support is available through govt schemes like PMFME & PMEGP for small units... Large units will get incentives and support under Bihar Industrial Investment Promotion Package 2025 (BIPPP 2025).

We’re giving 30-day industry approval via SIPB. BIADA giving Land. DIC processing files. But units can’t start because banks won’t lend where they take deposits.

This is not Ease of doing Business. This is ‘Ease of Taking Deposits, Denying Credit’.

बिहार में औद्योगिक निवेश का नया अध्याय शुरू हो चुका है। राज्य निवेश प्रोत्साहन बोर्ड (SIPB) की 67वीं बैठक में मुजफ्फरपुर और किशनगंज में डालमिया और अंबुजा सीमेंट की बड़ी इकाइयों को स्वीकृति दी गई है।

साथ ही 16 परियोजनाओं को स्टेज-1 क्लीयरेंस और 4 परियोजनाओं को वित्तीय मंजूरी मिली है। सीमांचल के युवाओं को अब रोजगार के लिए घर छोड़ने की जरूरत नहीं, उद्योग खुद उनके द्वार तक आ रहे हैं।

🚨Cabinet has approved ₹209 crore for the implementation of “The Aryabhata Drishti” project in partnership with Singapore-based GFTN (Global Finance & Technology Network).

• A 5-month advanced AI certification programme will be conducted with support from National University of Singapore Asian Institute of Digital Finance (NUS-AIDF) and the Linux Foundation.

• Around 7,000 students, including STEM & non-STEM graduates/postgraduates, will be trained over the next 5 years.

If yes, then its okay.
As dehydration follows a 1:10 ratio
I.e. 10 kg onion will yield 1kg powder.

PS - onion needs to be at max ₹4-6/kg in peak season for the unit to be viable.
As this is a highly seasonal, high cashflow industry.

आज दिनांक 17.01.2026 को जिला उद्योग केंद्र, शेखपुरा के प्रशिक्षण हॉल में जिला पदाधिकारी श्री शेखर आनंद की अध्यक्षता में मुख्यमंत्री सात निश्चय-3 कार्यक्रम के अंतर्गत “समृद्ध उद्योग, सशक्त बिहार” अभियान के तहत स्थानीय उद्यमियों के साथ “उद्योग वार्ता” का आयोजन किया गया।

कार्यक्रम के दौरान जिला पदाधिकारी महोदय ने उद्यमियों से सीधा संवाद कर उद्योग के विकास एवं विस्तार से जुड़े मुद्दों पर विस्तार से चर्चा की।

जिला पदाधिकारी महोदय ने सभी समस्याओं को गंभीरता से लेते हुए संबंधित अधिकारियों को एक सप्ताह के भीतर समाधान एवं प्रगति रिपोर्ट प्रस्तुत करने के सख्त निर्देश दिए।
