In the picture, I am with Mr. Cohen Carlos, who owns Feldstein Co. Ltd., a gold refinery in Kampala. It refines Uganda’s gold to a purity level of 99.9%, which recently was earning USD 173,000 per kilogram. On account of the war in the Gulf of Persia, the price is now USD 129,000.

This particular one and a half kilograms of gold that I am holding is from Ibanda. Mr. Cohen is building another refinery in Morulem, Abim.

Uganda is waking up. We have 10 licensed gold refineries in Uganda. Mr. Cohen’s refineries are printing the Bank of Uganda logo on the gold bars.

It is a painful irony that many Ugandans remember well. During the struggle against apartheid in South Africa Uganda under President Yoweri Museveni welcomed ANC and MK cadres when they needed solidarity ( in Angola) MK liberation fighters trained in Uganda, and the country still holds graves and memorials connected to that struggle. Many remember ANC leaders and commanders, including Oliver Tambo, Chris Hani, Jacob Zuma, Gen. Masondo and others visiting Kampala to support their comrades…… After apartheid, President Nelson Mandela came to Uganda and expressed gratitude for that solidarity.

Today, seeing fellow Africans subjected to xenophobic attacks in South Africa is heartbreaking. Uganda has even deployed Uganda Airlines flights to assist its citizens when violence has erupted. This is not what generations of African freedom fighters sacrificed for.

The struggle against apartheid was fought in the name of African unity, dignity and justice ….not for Africans to turn against fellow Africans. We owe it to Nelson Mandela, Mwalimu Nyerere, Samora machel, Chris Hani, Oliver Tambo and countless liberation heroes to reject xenophobia and uphold the spirit of Pan-African solidarity. Africa deserves better.

I commend Ambassador Simuli for his dedicated service and unwavering commitment to strengthening the historic bonds of friendship, cooperation, and brotherhood between Uganda and Tanzania. Today, I hosted Mr. Gilbert Weill, one of the survivors of the 1976 Entebbe hijacking, together with his family and friends at State House, Entebbe, as they returned to Uganda nearly 50 years after that tragic incident.
I told them that although the hijacking was a tragedy, the rescue operation became a turning point and marked the beginning of the collapse of the Idi Amin regime. I also shared Uganda’s journey from those difficult days to the peace, stability and progress we enjoy today, and emphasized the need to strengthen economic cooperation between Uganda, Israel and Europe, especially in value addition and agro-industrialisation.

Sitaane, 3 months ago, on the 21st of March, 2026, launched an attack on the life of Maama. However, sitaane miscalculated. The 21st of March is a good day for the Resistance. That is when we defeated the counter-attack of Idi Amin at Rugaando (12 miles from Mbarara) in 1979. God, using good doctors, saved Maama’s life and she is now recovering well.

Maama has done great things in the family, especially caring for the children during the 2nd phase of the Resistance between 1981 to 1986 when she was alone in exile and I was in the bush. She has been a great philanthropist with UWESO and she has contributed to the NRM politics in Ntungamo on top of her religious work.

I pray to God to get us to 100 years respectively so that we, among the other good things, see the birth of the East African Federation which is the Insurance of Africa against any future domination or marginalization.
