"Dangote is launching an I.P.O?"

I'm certain you've heard this from your friends,co-workers or perhaps in a gathering/community and the Fomo that reeks from the people when they say it.

The idea that you could put a few thousand naira into one of Africa’s biggest industrial projects and suddenly become a shareholder dey sweet for mouth lmao.

Before you rush to buy anything, you suppose know wetin I.P.O really mean:

An I.P.O: Initial Public Offering.

it's when a private company sells shares to the public for the first time.

And you're buying a small ownership interest in that business.

With the Dangote Refinery IPO, the company is offering:

4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 each, with the potential to raise about ₦2.15 trillion if fully subscribed. The minimum subscription is 10 shares, meaning an eligible investor can apply with ₦5,250.

The money raised is intended to help fund the refinery's next phase of expansion, with the company targeting an increase in capacity toward 1.4 million barrels per day.

That is just the basic mechanics.

BUYING a stock and MAKING money from a stock are two different things.

The fact that an IPO is generating enormous attention does not automatically mean the stock will keep going up after you buy it.

What an IPO gives you access to ownership. What happens to the value of that ownership afterward depends on the business:

→its financial performance, expectations already priced into the stock, market conditions, and how investors behave once the shares begin trading.

Are you buying because you believe the refinery can generate substantial cash flow over the long term?

Are you buying because you believe the expansion can materially increase the company's earnings?

Or are you simply buying because all the people wey you sabi dey talk about am?

Buying a stock is an action.

Trading a stock is a strategy.

Holding a stock is a decision based on a longer-term thesis.

They require different kinds of conviction.

If you're approaching an IPO from a trading perspective, common sense suppose tell you say all this hype you dey hear no suppose mean anything.

You fit just watch. OR:

You can study how the market reacts once trading begins.

You can wait for the initial euphoria (fomo) to settle before you go buy.

And if you're approaching it as a long-term investment, your question suppose dey different

WHY?

Because revenue, cash flow,capital expenditure, competitive advantages, expansion plans, valuation, dividends and the risks that could undermine your thesis/analysis.

Share prices can rise or fall, dividends are not guaranteed, and investors can lose money.

So before you rush into the Dangote IPO because everyone is talking about it, understand what you're actually buying.

Don't let the excitement make your investment analysis for you.

Do your research, Know WHY you're buying, Know what would make you change your mind.
