India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam has reached “criticality,” meaning the nuclear reaction has started and can sustain itself. In simple terms, the reactor is now working. This is a major scientific and engineering milestone because fast breeder reactors are extremely difficult to build and operate, and many advanced countries have struggled with them or even abandoned them after investing billions of dollars.

What makes this reactor special is that, unlike regular LWR reactors, it can produce more fuel than it consumes. It can also reuse nuclear waste and generate large amounts of energy for a long time. This allows India to extract much more energy from the same fuel, making its nuclear program far more efficient. Very few countries have reached this level, placing India among a small group of technologically advanced nations.

This success is crucial for India’s future energy security. Instead of relying heavily on imported fuel, India can move towards producing its own and becoming more self-reliant. More importantly, this reactor is a key step in India’s long-term plan to use thorium, a resource it has in abundance, which could provide clean and reliable energy for hundreds of years.
