i started working in mining straight out of school, remote sites, long rotations and harsh conditions and out there, weakness gets exposed fast, you carry your own weight, you fix your own gear, you eat what you cook, no one babysits you underground...

that environment trains you to rely on yourself or get crushed, literally. after few years, that mindset followed me home.

i paid my bills early, handled repairs, made my own food, kept my emotions locked up tight and independence became identity. if something broke, i fixed it. if something hurt, i buried it. i didn’t need anyone and i wore that like armor but this the part nobody tells you; when you build a life where no one is needed, you also build one where no one fits. relationships started feeling inefficient, emotional conversations felt unnecessary, vulnerability felt like handing someone a pickaxe and hoping they wouldn’t swing.

self sufficiency and independence is powerful, yes it makes you competent, steady and hard to shake but if your not careful as a man, it turns into emotional isolation disguised as strength and unlearning that, learning to let someone stand beside you instead of always proving you can stand alone is harder than any shift underground.

Onwuka, effectively took over from January 2006 and steadily grew the bank to profit after tax of N3.977b in 2006, N7.086b in 2007, N12.82b in 2008 and N1.328b in 2009. The bank posted loss of N11.214b in 2010 and another loss after tax of N13.940b in 2011.

Alex Otti took over in 2011 and in his first full year of 2012 the bank posted a profit after tax of N22.108b, N32.5b in 2013 and N28.36 when he handed over in 2014. The bank also saw its total assets rise from N564.9b in February 2011 to N1.18 trillion by December 31, 2012 and N1.52 trillion in 2013.

Alex Otti doubled the full staff count from around 2,000 in 2010 to over 4,000 in 2014. He expanded the bank's network from 210 branches in 2011 to over 265 branches three years later. Under his watch also, the bank established an international subsidiary in the United Kingdom, in addition to expansion in Francophone West Africa (Senegal, Togo, and Ivory Coast).

In 2015, his first full year as head of the bank, the bank’s profit after tax went down from N28.36b to N5.656b. It went down further to N3.499b in 2016 and a loss of N9.011b in 2017.

In 2017, noticing that it could no longer continue to cope with losses from its subsidiaries, the bank sold its West African operations in Benin, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal to Manzi Finances S.A., a Cote d’Ivoire-based financial services holding company and the bank later sold its United Kingdom’s operations.

In 2018, the bank went into coma and had to be merged with Access Bank.

Run the math on "Smack That." $200K per quarter is $800K a year. The song came out in 2006. If it has paid anywhere near that rate for 20 years, that's a 2006 recording session generating $15M+ in cumulative cash flow with zero ongoing cost. No inventory, no employees, no maintenance capex.

And the income is multi-channel. The song has 1.7 billion Spotify streams alone, but streaming is the smallest piece. Radio spins, TV syncs, movie placements, video games, TikTok licensing, international collection societies. A 2006 hit predates streaming, so its licensing footprint got built when sync deals paid full freight.

The key detail: Akon wrote his hits. The artist on a record gets recording royalties, which the label mostly keeps until the advance recoups. The writer gets publishing royalties, which flow from dollar one and last 70 years past death. Same song, completely different economics depending on which side of it you own.

The Kingdom of Benin was casting brass sculptures using the lost-wax technique before the 13th century.

In 1897, British soldiers raided Benin City and took thousands of them. When the sculptures reached Europe, many refused to believe Africans had made them. They credited the Portuguese. They credited ancient Egypt.

Felix von Luschan, curator at Berlin’s Ethnological Museum, later wrote that the works stood among the highest heights of European casting. He meant it as a compliment. He did not realize it was a confession.

Most of those sculptures are still in European museums today.

Each one was carved from a single piece of wood, shaped to reflect the owner’s identity, status and soul. The Golden Stool was considered so sacred that when the British Governor demanded to sit on it in 1900, the Ashanti took up arms rather than allow it.
