What is reportedly happening to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai after court granted him bail should worry every Nigerian who still believes in the rule of law.
If a court has granted a citizen bail, then the expectation in any serious democracy is simple: respect the court, follow due process, and allow the legal process to continue without intimidation or unnecessary drama.
Reports that DSS allegedly whisked El-Rufai away after bail was granted, while his wife was denied access to him, raise very serious questions. This is no longer just about El-Rufai. It is about whether court orders still carry weight. It is about whether state institutions are operating within the law or above it.
No matter how powerful a government is, it must not treat the judiciary like decoration. A bail order is not a suggestion. It is a legal decision that must be respected unless lawfully challenged through proper channels.
If the government has another lawful basis to hold him, Nigerians deserve transparency. If not, then this begins to look less like prosecution and more like political persecution wearing official uniform.
El-Rufai deserves due process. His wife deserves humane access. Nigerians deserve answers. Institutions must not behave in a way that makes citizens feel that justice depends on political convenience.
Today it is El-Rufai.
Tomorrow it could be anyone.
A democracy where security agencies can appear to override the court is a democracy in danger.
