Last night I travelled from Lyantonde to Kiboga District. Not a short trip, but one I was glad to make.

Today is the Grand Finale of the SunSow Girls Football Tournament 2026, and I wanted to be here for it.

The last time I was in Kiboga was in 2019, for the very first edition of this tournament. Watching what it has become since then is incredible.

What started as an idea is now a full program reaching over 2,500 girls across 100 schools in Kiboga District. Girls competing, learning, and being seen in a district that does not always make the headlines.

The organization behind all of this is SunSow Girls Football Foundation @SunSowGirls, led by @ssaabwelnnocent, a former @BldgTomorrow fellow.

This is the same fellowship I went through. And honestly, it is not surprising that he built this. Two years of living and working in rural communities change how you see things. You stop reading about the challenges and start watching them play out in front of you every day.

Many fellows never really left. They stayed in the communities they were posted in, or they carried those communities with them into whatever they built next. That is what happened with Innocent. That is what happened with me, too, in my own way.

The tournament is not just football. Girls here are getting mentorship, menstrual health education, financial literacy training, and academic scholarships through the #SowHerFuture campaign. The theme this year is “Her Game, Our Future,” and standing here at Bugabo Community Grounds watching the day unfold, that phrase makes sense.

The day started with a band marching through the communities of Bugabo, raising awareness on girls’ education and gender equality. Taking the message off the pitch and into the streets where the real conversations happen.

What a day it is setting up to be!
