Flight 0024 is our final destination, and it takes us to Cognac France! Tonight we sample Martingale Rare Reserve Cognac. This Cognac is older than a VSOP and younger than an XO. This is the only non whiskey in the Flavair Advent Calendar. Cognac and whiskey are like cousins separated by geography. Both spirits are aged in oak barrels, and both have deep flavor profiles. If you like Whiskey, you'll enjoy Cognac. Martingale Rare Reserve Cognac is very floral, with hints of vanilla, and nuts. Highly recommend. And the perfect way to end this adventure...5/5 cannoli.
Flight 0023, our next to last trip, takes us to Louisville Kentucky where we sample Heaven's Door Revelation Double Barrel Whiskey. Heaven's Door was co-created by Bob Dylan. This bottle is a blend of 2 straight bourbons and 1 straight rye. It is finished in custom Tonnellerie Radoux barrels. It has a cocoa, brown sugar, vanilla, and oak finish. An excellent KY Whiskey. 4.8/ 5 cannoli.
Match Game host, Gene Rayburn, was born on this day in 1917. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Air Forces during WWII. He was also the 70's game show host with the thinnest....Blank.
Flight 0022 takes us to Dublin Ireland, where we sample NATTERJACK Irish Whiskey. Founded in 2019, their namesake, the Natterjack Toad, is the only toad native to Ireland. Its "croak" can be heard up to 2 miles away! Crafted from 20% malted barley and 80% corn, it is triple distilled and first aged for 3 years in ex bourbon barrels and then finished for 1 year in virgin American Oak. This is one SMOOTH whiskey! It has a great orange zest hit, a hint of honey, and a hint of lemon, with a touch of spice. This is one to put on the holiday table! 4.8/5 cannoli.
Flight 0021 takes us to Seattle, where we sample Woodinville 's Port Barrels Cask Finish Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Woodinville sources their casks from Portugal's Douro Valley to finish this Bourbon. This is a smooth Bourbon Whiskey. It's fruity and has a hint of vanilla and spice. And did we say smooth? This will make a great gift for someone just getting into Whiskey or for someone who loves Port Barrel Bourbons. 4.5/5 cannoli
Flight 0020 takes us to Los Angeles, where we find Lodestar American Whiskey. Started by cousins Anna Axster and Wendelin von Schroder, it is a blend of Straight High Rye Bourbon and American Single Malt. Rye forward with citrus, particularly lemon zest. 3.2/5 cannolis
Flight 0020 takes us back to Ireland, where we try Finvara's The King's Gambit Irish Whiskey. Named for the mythical King Finvara, protector of the magical kingdom of Daoine Sidhe the guardian of nature, it is distilled at the historic Fort of Dealgan by the Castle Town River. It's spicy, a hint of leather and honey. This would make a great Hot Toddy! 4.6/5 cannoli
Flight 0018 takes us to Finland, where we will try Kyro 's Wood Smoked Rye Whiskey. Kyro was founded in 2014 when friends converted a dairy to a distillery (a great re-purpose!). Made from 100% malted Finnish whole grain rye, it is matured in ex bourbon, French oak, and new American oak, barrels. This smoked rye is crafted to honor the old finnish tradition of the "Smoke Sauna". And smoked it is! Beyond the first hit of smoke, it is peppery with hot honey and oak. Not a beginners rye. This would go perfectly in smokey rye cocktails. 3.5/5 cannoli
