According to late-medieval tradition Mary Magdalene spent her final 30 years as an ascetic hermit in the French wilderness, devoting herself entirely to prayer and fasting. Over time, her clothes completely rotted and wore away. To protect her modesty and provide warmth in the desert, God miraculously caused her body hair to grow long and thick to cover her completely.
