The sighting of the crescent moon of Ramadan is one of the magnificent scenes that never fail to bring joy and anticipation for the blessed month of Ramadan.
Many tales and stories, especially with the current advancements in astronomy and electronic monitoring tools, are associated with the sighting of the crescent moon.
In the past, the only way to see the crescent moon was with the naked eye, and there were no means to spread the news of sighting the Ramadan crescent due to the absence of radio and television.
Various methods were used to convey this joyful news, from traditional methods like echoing sounds of drums reaching nearby villages, to signaling with bonfires on mountaintops (beacons), indicating the completion of Shaban, along with the sound of cannons near gathering places.
Mohammed Al-Thaqafi, an astronomer and expert in solar and lunar observation, stated that reliable astronomical observatories across the Kingdom have contributed to the development of methods for detecting and confirming the sighting of the crescent moon.
In the modern era, the sighting is not limited to the naked eye alone but is supported by modern technology to track the birth of the crescent moon during daylight hours and beyond sunset.
