Rumors since a few days that Shashi Tharoor likely to replace Jaishankar as external affairs minister.
My take:
1. Modi needs both for different reasons. As the insider, Jaishankar knows @MEAIndia well. He is best suited to control the narrative to project his BOSS as the world leader. Tharoor is more articulate & intelligent than Jaishankar, so well suited to be Prime Minister's special envoy-at-large (trouble shooter) with possibly Union minister status.
2. Both speak English, a rarity in Modi government. So, both suited to interact with the English-speaking world. Since the Prime Minister has aligned India with the US & western nations, this is a huge asset.
3. Since Tharoor is ambitious and self-serving, the elevated status suits him as he believes that he is not getting his deserved due in @INCIndia
4. Moreover, since Tharoor can explain Modi government's achievement without blinking his eyes, he can very well explain how the new Congress is vastly different from the old Congress which he joined and wrote about in his books.
5. To an ambitious man, ideology is of no concern.
6. Thus, by making Tharoor his official trouble shooter, Modi will have an insider inside the Congress also. One stone, many birds!
