We rarely talk about the hidden costs of relocating to another country, beyond visas, paperwork, and culture shock. One of the hardest parts is the impact on relationships and loved ones.
Moving abroad often means missing birthdays, weddings, and everyday moments that cannot be recreated over a screen. It can strain friendships and even family ties, and sometimes, despite our best efforts, we may never see certain loved ones again.
Yet, for many, the journey is worth it, but it is important to acknowledge the sacrifices, not just the opportunities, because growth and adventure should not come at the cost of unspoken grief.
Sending a cold email to a professor on holidays or weekends often leads to no response. One of the key lessons from our mentorship programs is not only the ability to craft a compelling email but also the importance of timing. I always schedule most of my emails to go out on Monday on Sunday, and I make sure to check the local time of each recipient to ensure it reaches them during work hours. Just because it’s 9 AM in Nigeria doesn’t mean it’s 9 AM everywhere in the world.
JUST IN: Canada’s Immigration Minister has announced Six (6) additional measures for the International Student Program in Canada.
Details coming shortly.
This legislation would automatically confer Canadian citizenship to persons born abroad to a Canadian parent who is also born abroad prior to the coming into force of this legislation. It would also extend access to a direct grant of citizenship to children born abroad and adopted by a Canadian parent beyond the first generation. Following the coming into force of the legislation, parents born abroad who have or adopt children also born outside Canada will need to have spent at least 1,095 cumulative days of physical presence in Canada prior to the birth or adoption of their child to pass on citizenship. https://t.co/446Y34XKqK
UPDATE: From yesterday’s meeting between Canada’s immigration Minister and Ministers of Immigration in all the provinces.
“A key method of restricting the population of temporary residents is to offer them permanent resident status, the immigration minister (Marc Miller) said Friday.
“Several provincial ministers pitched expanding their own immigration programs as a way to transition temporary visa holders into permanent residents.” - CBC News https://t.co/a15OZ8onO4
Like we always say, prepare ahead and let those opportunities meet you prepared.
- Do your language tests and pass very well
- Complete your degree assessment
- Complete your Canadian degree in record time
- Get skills in sectors that are in-demand, etc.
When permanent residency opportunities come, they are usually tied to some of the things mentioned above.
May your life changing opportunities meet you very prepared.

Have you recently received MSc/PhD admissions without funding?
1. Reach out to professors in the Department
2. Check the university's website for Teaching Assistantships (TAs), Research, and Service Assistantship positions.
Teaching assistantships (TAs) are typically funded through the academic department responsible for the course.
Research and Service Assistantships are graduate assistantships available in non-academic departments, such as research and service roles.
@Olufemiloye Exactly sir. I feel applying together is the best for the family and can decide later if principal applicant should go first after approval.
