New Info about the State of Decay 3 Alpha from UL
-Week of May 4th - Reviewing candidates and selecting players.
-Week of May 11th - Invites will be sent to selected players
- Limited number of spaces, if not selected, you will be eligible for selection in future playtests
I'm not sure anyone has been more disappointed about the fact Zombie Deer isn't going to be a thing in State of Decay 3.
I felt it could make the game stand out more, but honestly, at this point. I've played the game for close to a year. I'm happy with what they've got

Setting and Story Evolution:
• State of Decay 3 takes place several years after second game.
• Survivors are now more hardened, but the zombie threat has evolved significantly — especially with a dangerous plague that actively threatens player bases.
• The game emphasizes adapting to this new, more aggressive world.
• The plague remains a central evolving threat.
• SOD3 delivering on the systemic features from second game with a little bit more of the heart and soul of the first.
Gameplay Focus:
• The world feels more “picked clean,” so players scavenge raw materials to craft improvised weapons, explosives, and other gear.
• Combat and locomotion have been greatly improved and feel more responsive and deep.
• Enemies like juggernauts and bloaters return in evolved, more satisfying forms.
• Base building and settlement variety support different survival fantasies.
Multiplayer Improvements:
• Multiplayer supports up to 4-player co-op in a truly shared open world (untethered, no more peer-to-peer like in SOD2).
• Players can start in different locations and explore more independently while still contributing to a shared experience.
• Players can join and leave asynchronously, and the game fully supports both solo play (still the most popular mode) and it will feel complete and satisfying on its own.
Development Process:
• Undead Labs has a 'player council' has been giving feedback playable builds behind-the-scenes for about a year.
• They’re now opening a small Alpha test followed by larger betas.
• The team is heavily focused on iterative testing based on community input.
More Details:
• The 2020 trailer was very early pre-rendered concept footage and does not represent the final game (no zombie animals, for example).
• Strong post-launch support is promised, similar to State of Decay 2.
• The tone is more serious and consequential (with permadeath impact) than the sometimes campy feel of the previous game.
• The studio is collaborating and sharing tech with other Xbox Game Studios teams (e.g., The Coalition and Obsidian).
