New big GTA 6 Interview from IGN

CONTEXT:

IGN saw a 30-minute GTA 6 demo at Rockstar North in July, played live by Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head.
This is the full interview. The highlights were published in August, after the Netflix extended look.

CHARACTERS AND RELATIONSHIP

Jason and Lucia can be played on their own or together, and you can switch between them almost freely outside of story moments.
Each has their own daily routine. They text and call each other, and ignoring the other's messages can slightly hurt the relationship.
The relationship system is separate from the criminal profile. It improves through time spent together (pool, mini golf, kayaking, robberies, etc.), and you can hold hands with R2.
The romance is optional. It has no gameplay benefit, and the two stay partners in crime either way. It does affect how their story plays out.
Rockstar considered more than two protagonists after GTA 5 but worried about diluting player connection. Chemistry between the two was a key challenge.
Nelson says physical intimacy has to be done right and they are iterating on it to avoid a "weird caricature."

WORLD AND NPCS

Safehouses are interactive and closer to the camps in RDR2 than to earlier GTA safehouses. They are staying in someone else's house.
NPCs have far more variety in height and body shape, because animations are now retargeted on the fly.
The NPC interaction system evolved from RDR2 (lock on, greet or antagonize). Conversations can be eavesdropped on, but people notice and react.
The world acts on you too. Unlike in earlier GTAs, NPCs can be armed and dangerous, so you are less "all-powerful."
Nelson calls it the largest, deepest, most densely populated world Rockstar has built, and the team has doubled in size partly because of that density.

CRIME, POLICE AND CARS

The Wanted system needs a witness or a triggered alarm. Police know your outfit, your vehicle and that you're a couple.
You can lose heat by changing clothes, swapping cars, splitting up or leaving the area. Hit-and-run is the encouraged style.
Car theft is no longer a single button. A phone scanner shows whether a car is locked, alarmed or tracked, and what it's worth. Some cars need tools such as a key cloner or slim-jim, and carjacking drivers always works.
Advanced trackers ping the police if you drive too slowly. Damaged cars sell for less to fences.
A "Criminal Profile" tracks what kind of criminal you are. It is not RDR2's honor system, and there is no right or wrong way to play.
Robbing nearly any shop is possible (safe codes, explosives, getaways). Money matters more, and you sometimes have to earn it to advance missions.
Getting arrested means "Busted" and a respawn, as before.

OTHER SYSTEMS

Eating gives buffs, overeating adds weight, and gyms raise strength or muscularity.
Salons and clothing stores have standard and unique items, and the Safehouse only allows reductive hair changes. Your personal vehicle holds spare outfits and weapons.
A Uber-style service, Ryde Me, works as fast travel.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Choice was a central goal, with many big and small choices that add up.
The team wants the narrative and the open world to feel like one experience.
Missions are more open where possible. The tower block escape has multiple routes, and the Raul chase can be completed off the optimal route.
Nelson says the story benefits from time spent in the world rather than rushing mission to mission, and he expects replayability like RDR2.
Satire develops later in the process. Because of the long development cycle, the team avoids dated memes, specific politics and contemporary slang.
The characters' backstories leave room for interpretation so players can connect with them.

CLOSING POINTS

The team is nervous but excited about the pressure and scrutiny around every frame.

Nelson main message is that, beyond the new systems, it is "still very much Grand Theft Auto."

NEW GTA 6 DETAILS:

- Switching to Jason can find him completely naked and taking a shower as part of his daily routine

- Players can hold hands with their partner by holding R2

- Players will be able to rob almost anything, with robberies making up a major part of what you can and need to do between story missions

- Robberies can be planned by positioning a getaway vehicle beforehand, while safes can be opened using combinations or explosives that may damage some of the valuables inside

- Personal vehicles can be called at any time and will carry all weapons purchased by the player

- Damaging a stolen vehicle reduces how much a car fence will pay for it

- Advanced vehicle trackers can reveal your location to police when driving too slowly

- Your partner can handle the getaway while you shoot at pursuing enemies, even during unscripted open-world robberies

- GTA 6 will feature choices both big and small, with smaller decisions adding up over time

- Some story missions feature multiple routes, with Rockstar trying to give players more freedom instead of requiring one specific approach

- GTA 6 will feature more radio and in-game TV advertisements than any previous entry

- Jason and Lucia can browse and follow accounts on Snapmatic, but cannot post because they’re on the run

- Rockstar is avoiding overly modern slang, memes and specific political references to prevent GTA 6 from feeling dated

- The world can naturally interrupt your plans, with Jason or Lucia able to point out nearby opportunities and activities while exploring

- Rockstar says even developers can still encounter things they haven’t seen before because of how much content is in the game
