After finishing 15th, Amorim got 4 transfers:
1. Cunha (injured vs City)
2. Mbeumo
3. Lammens (no matches played yet)
4. Sesko (first Premier League start vs City)
I get all the outrage, but it feels like a lot of the media and X accounts had already made up their minds after the Grimsby match. Everything points to the fact that they were never going to give him a fair chance to have a pre-season, bring in new transfers, and then be judged from there.
For context, here are the first five fixtures since the summer:
1. Arsenal: 0-1 loss after being the better side, and an encouraging performance against a title contender.
2. Fulham: 1-1 draw (poor match, missed a penalty)
3. Grimsby Town (Carabao Cup): Lost on penalties, and frankly, you shouldn’t need tactics to beat Grimsby.
4. Burnley: 3-2 win (it should have been a 4 or 5 difference).
5. Man City: 0-3 loss (another poor performance, but again, against a title contender).
Now it’s only GW4, and both the media and the fanbase are on a witch hunt. Most of it is based on last season, when he took over a squad that was 14th (I think?) in November, and he only got one left-back from Lecce in January to implement his system (which is what he was brought in for.)
And let’s not forget: in his first half-season, he managed to reach a European final, something that gets completely overlooked in the current narrative.
I get that his record is extremely bad, but it was already extremely bad in the summer. That’s not new. What happened to “I’ll give him time to show what he can do with a pre-season and new transfers?”
I’m not going along with the hysteria. I really want to see a run of games before making a judgment. Bringing in a new manager in September is insanity, in my opinion.
If this run is already enough for you to start a witch hunt, just admit you wanted him gone in the summer. Let’s not pretend this is about four matches.
