Meet Gruff the buff. Yesterday, our SWT/Meru Veterinary Unit got a call to collect a newborn buffalo, which had been abandoned. We scooped the baby and brought it to Kaluku, where Keeper Joseph offered a warm welcome, before we tucked the young male into a freshly prepared stable to allow him to settle after a traumatic 24 hours.

Gruff is one of many wild orphans currently in our care. With your help, we’ll provide for his daily needs and when he’s grown and ready, he’ll reclaim his place in the wild.

In February 2007, an ordinary day turned extraordinary with the discovery of a blind yearling rhino wandering alone in Nairobi National Park. Lost, vulnerable, and calling out, he was found by our Keepers. It took the strength of ten men—and a dash into a bush by
Daphne Sheldrick—to safely secure the little powerhouse.

That rhino was Maxwell. Despite his blindness, he’s grown into a confident, charismatic figure, the sole longterm resident at the Nursery - black rhinos are highly territorial and his blindness would make him a target for other males.
