I got more Hugging Face downloads this month shipping 𝗷𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗮𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 on open models 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗮𝗯 has across their whole public catalog.

~260k on my open models. ~164k across Sarvam's public catalog.

Not apples to apples. Different products, budgets, mandates and release timelines. I'm not claiming I built a better lab. I'm claiming open source adoption is the signal that matters and it points at something uncomfortable.

Qwen didn't win by being a Chinese-market model. DeepSeek didn't win on a Mandarin benchmark. They built the best open models in the world and let developers vote with downloads. That's the game.

My bet on how the Qwens of India will start: research and distribution on popular open bases. Build data, evals, methods, and taste at a global standard. Pretrain when the advantage is real, not when the Trump administration does something stupid.
