Governor Ochilo Ayacko’s own words tell us everything about his attitude towards development.

He argues that there is no reason to build better roads when people have no money in their pockets. He even claims that better tarmac roads could help thieves “smoothen” their activities and put our children at risk of being knocked down by vehicles using those roads.

This is not the vision Migori deserves.

A serious leader should be asking: How do we create jobs, improve incomes, build better roads, strengthen healthcare and open opportunities for our people?

Instead, the only “development” the warlord Governor appears to understand is the mobilisation of goons to heckle, intimidate and silence political opponents.

DEMOCRACY MUST SURVIVE OUR POLITICS

As leaders in Luo Nyanza, even as we work together in the broad-based Government and appreciate development reaching our region, we must never lose sight of the democratic values that shaped our political journey.

H.E. Raila Odinga taught us to listen, engage constructively and disagree without hatred. He never taught us to harm our opponents.

We must rise above bonfires, burning tyres, blood and injuries. No political disagreement is worth the suffering of an innocent mwananchi.

Let the Linda Mwananchi brigade have their day, their say and go. Migori is becoming more open and progressive; we should not disrupt our people's lives over political differences.

To leaders calling for violence against those who disagree with them: that is not leadership, nor is it the democratic tradition our people fought for.

We can disagree strongly without turning our differences into street battles. Intimidation does not kill ideas; it multiplies their sympathisers.

Let us debate fiercely, disagree courageously and protect the peace and dignity of our people.

Democracy must remain bigger than any individual leader.
