Out now! Domestic violence remains ubiquitous yet concealed and in this book we use the lens of the law to ask why this is so and understand how survivors negotiate in these violent settings...
Violent Domestic seeks to go beyond the marital home as the only site of domestic. It looks at experiences beyond the heteronormative and the ableist in mapping voices of lesbianism and transgender women as well as women with physical and psycho-social disabilities.
In 2005 the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) became a civil law intended to combat violence against women in intimate familial settings. Through testimonies of survivors from seven sites across West Bengal this book traces the journey of the law.
We ask whether the law reshapes the domestic or whether the embeddedness of violence in the domestic is so complete that change through law must necessarily be partial and imperfect?

What is this country we are living in? The latest in the long series of denial of the most basic of human rights, so basic that it requires a special level of cruelty to pull this off...
Father Stan Swamy had to wait for a month to secure his right to use a sipper and straw, now Gautam Navlakha is having to ask the court to be allowed to use a mosquito net in prison! And India just celebrated the 75th anniversary of freedom! Cry, my beloved country!
As a member of STA I have been working closely with Sanghati Solidarity Schools and can vouch for the tremendous work they are doing. Please donate generously to this fund-raiser to buy for the students an audiovisual set up.

An excellent article by David Ralph @tcddublin@TCDsociology. He makes use of publicly available women's testimonies to speak compellingly to #AbortionJustice debates in Ireland - with resonance elsewhere (@orlammurray @UoE_genderED please share)
Reading Servants' Past was an extremely enjoyable and immersing experience. Immensely grateful to have been given the chance to review what would definitely be counted as a seminal contribution to labour history.
Between venom-spewing, feminism-appropriating right wingers to apologists of hegemony of inherited privilege, was Bollywood always such a slugfest or does the boredom around pandemic magnify their nastiness ๐ค๐คฎ#yuckbollywood#bighouseboredom
Great session with @RStweet18 and @brodiegal highlighting the need to interrogate what we include/understand as home, family, marriage in the context of the shadow pandemic that is the rise in domestic violence.
