Surrey Quest has been a special horse for us, @sevenbarrows and @tobylawesracing - today he had his last race under rules. His name is imprinted on the Mandarin Trophy, who will forget that Scottish National ! He will start a new chapter and a loving life outside of racing. 💛💙
@ScottPr84@sevenbarrows@tobylawesracing Yeah he’s fine - he’s had a couple of breathing ops but he’s still struggling when the race heats up. He’s still in love with training and racing but there’s not much else we can do - he’s happy and someone will give him a great home.
Surrey Quest retired today - what a stalwart - but the most views on social media was from being Constitutional Hill’s neighbour!!
He’s going to have a very loving life outside of racing 💛💙
Not sure it totally helps but
NH racing had a rate of 0.56% of runners in 2024 (166 deaths from 29,885 runners).
However, these figures only relate to 40% of racehorse deaths, 60% are fatally injured away from the racecourse
Wondering if anyone knows the answers to the following:
1. What % of falls over hurdles result in a career ending injury?
2. What % of falls over hurdles are fatal?
Perhaps @BHAHorseracing would know?
I think you’ve missed the point. I was merely remarking that despite the high costs, syndicates (Bashers and ourselves etc) offer better value than race clubs, who in this situation are charging £75k for training. (1st year is £150k but I presume that incl buying the horse)
@SurreyRacing Also, £60 per share for the first year. £30 per share renewal thereafter. So your math would be wrong. I did state that in my original convo with Bashy.
Interesting this - I’m sure you are both having great fun - but on the basis that Handlethekettle has 2500 shares - at £30 - that’s £75k for the year - makes Basher’s syndicate much better value.
@BasherWatts Two whiskers 😂 it’s in the 0. % but for me just getting into horse racing in the last couple of years, it’s given me some really good days out 💙 I’m absolutely in love with HandleTheKettle too so that helps lol
We enjoy both types but watching a horse you own over jumps is so stressful, almost unbearable. Surely Constitution Hill’s connections want to enjoy his final racing years on the flat - he won’t fall, he’ll be competitive, racing at marquee meetings - some lap of honour !
Not far to travel for the Surrey team today - off to @LingfieldPark with Surrey Quest to see if he can win at least one National ! Good luck @tobylawesracing@kevinbrogan109 - bring him home safe
