Congratulations to Louise Morales and Deborah Hughes, both elected in yesterday's by-election! Thank you to all our supporters and those who voted for a great team for Woking South and How Valley! #Woking
Pleased @GetTheToryOut are recommending people vote for the @LibDems in the #Surrey and #Woking by-elections on 10th July! Find out more here: https://t.co/s6HhYB28Yp
In the #SpendingReview yesterday, the Chancellor failed local government by only giving them a 1.1% budget increase - despite a huge increase in demand for services. In #Woking, my local council has already gone bankrupt - I fear more will follow.

Yesterday, I was pleased to have got #Surrey County Council to U-turn on refusing to reply to MPs about home to school transport, school places and special educational needs casework. But this isn’t a battle we should have had to fight in the first place!

I was in Ukraine earlier this week, I know this £2.26 billion will be put to good use in the fight against Russia’s illegal invasion - regardless of what fantasy land Donald Trump lives in.

Today, with my five Liberal Democrat Surrey MP colleagues, I have written to the Secretary of State for Education asking her to intervene directly with Surrey County Council to protect Surrey children from harm. Surrey County Council is treating families in crisis with contempt. The appalling reality of child protection and Special Educational Needs in Surrey is avoidable child deaths, including my 17 year old constituent Jennifer Chalkley, 1800 SEND children out of school over a third of the time and the highest level of complaints to the Local Government Ombudsman in the country. Yet the council leadership are on public record as saying that there is no particular problem, merely articulate parents. And the council leader has misled Members of Parliament about the council covering up complaints. Parents, teachers and staff across Surrey have shown considerable moral courage whistleblow to us to expose this scandal. We urge the Secretary of State to take decisive action. Hold on, so after the Tory leadership in Surrey begged the gov’t to cancel elections, the Tories at national level now want the elections to go ahead
🍿👇
Following a request from the Conservatives running #Surrey County Council to cancel May’s local elections, the Labour Government have decided to reorganise our local government and cancel the elections - my statement as #Woking’s MP.
SURREY RESIDENTS AMONG MILLIONS DENIED THE CHANCE TO VOTE IN 2025
🔸 Conservative request to CANCEL May local elections granted by government
🔸 Opposed by Lib Dems at every level
🔸 Your elected Lib Dems will work to make sure you are democratically and locally represented
The Surrey Leaders Group and I have written to the Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution, Jim McMahon MP, to express our commitment to the devolution and reorganisation of local government in the county and to urge him to allow May's County Council elections go-ahead as planned.
This is a cross-party group that brings together the leaders of all the Districts and Boroughs of Surrey, as well as the MPs representing the residents and businesses of Surrey.
Surrey’s Tories are falsely claiming that they have no choice but to postpone this year’s election this is not true!
On Wed they’ll vote to request postponement - this’ll be their choice
We believe the elections should go ahead, please sign ✍️ 👇

Honoured to have my Maiden speech in Parliament nominated for Speech of the Year by Parliament News alongside 5 other MPs.
In it, I shared Christopher Laskaris’s tragic story—a young man with autism who was murdered.
Cllr. Harry Boparai and Cllr. Suraj Gyawali make a great team!
Harry's Sunbury Common borough colleague, Cllr. Suraj Gyawali says, "There is so much overlap between borough & county issues. As our county councillor Harry has been able to bring people together to resolve problems."

I welcome this Government initiative to tackle long-term empty properties in our town centres. I’ve asked @wokingcouncil how many shops in #Woking town centre could be eligible for High Street Rental Auctions - keen to fill those empty premises and help small businesses.
Alongside the other #LibDem MPs for #Surrey, I’ve written to @SurreyCouncil calling for an investigation into why information on complaints about the local authority have not published for more than a year.
