May you rest in peace, Pope Francis.
You stood up and spoke out — relentlessly — for the poor, the persecuted, the victims of war, the refugees, the migrants.
May you continue to give us faith and courage in this brutal world.
@Pontifex
270,000 Syrian refugees returned home since the fall of the Assad regime and many more plan to return in the next year, according to our latest regional return intention survey.
The survey’s results highlight key elements of hope and needs:
🔹Over a quarter of Syrian refugees intend to go back to rebuild their lives in the next 12 months.
🔹Almost all refugees who plan to return in the next 12 months plan to return to their place of origin.
🔹Major obstacles to return include concerns over available housing and property rights, safety, access to basic services and economic challenges.
🔹Over 60% of refugees wish to visit Syria before making a final decision to return.
🔹Refugees who are willing to return need assistance in transportation and financial aid.

Tens of thousands of Syrians have been forced from their homes by the recent fighting in Aleppo and beyond. Many have gone to Homs, Hama, Lattakia and Rural Damascus. Others have gone to Ar-Raqqa. They have fled just with what they were able to take with them at haste.
UNHCR and its partners are providing blankets, mattresses and other crucial items.
Thirteen years on, people in Syria are still on the run.
Last night, Israel bombed for the third time the Syrian side of the border crossing with Lebanon, at Joussieh. The major damage now makes it almost impossible for people fleeing Lebanon to pass. In spite of the serious risks involved, UNHCR Protection staff are there right now, trying to help physically those fit enough to cross. But they have also seen some elderly simply turn back to Lebanon.
Bombed in Lebanon. Bombed while trying to escape. And some of the very frail forced to go back to face more bombings.
The number of people who have crossed into Syria from Lebanon fleeing Israeli airstrikes — Lebanese and Syrian nationals — has reached 100,000. The outflow continues.
UNHCR is present at four crossing points alongside local authorities and @SYRedCrescent to support new arrivals.
The authorities in Syria are opening up collective shelters for vulnerable Lebanese who don't have a place to stay. Today, UNHCR staff and partners visited some of these in Homs. After their dramatic journey, they now have a place to rest, receive assistance, and share their stories.
More than 50,000 Lebanese and Syrians living in Lebanon have now crossed into Syria fleeing Israeli airstrikes. Well over 200,000 are displaced inside Lebanon.
Relief operations are underway, including by UNHCR, to help all those in need, in coordination with both governments.
The escalating crisis in Lebanon is frightening. Thousands of people were forced from their homes today, in a region already devastated by war.
The toll on civilians is unacceptable.
Political leaders must bring solutions. An end to the hostilities is urgently needed.
