One way Pharmacy Benefit Managers are destroying community pharmacies is by forcing people to use mail-order pharmacies so they can pay themselves excessive reimbursement fees that drive up costs for all of us. Here's an example. 👇
California is home to the most immigrants out of any state in the nation.
We also have the strongest economy out of any state in the nation.
Not despite our immigrant population –– but because of it.
🎉 We’re thrilled to announce that our PBM bill has officially passed the Senate floor with overwhelming bipartisan support!
A heartfelt thank you to our incredible grassroots pharmacist advocates—you made this possible. 🙌

Senator Cory Booker at a PBM hearing: "This is a level of corporate violence that is costing American lives, a level of colossal greed that is costing American's wellbeing, am I overstating the facts"
Answer: "No."
The API Legislative Caucus recognized Dr. Brian Komoto of Delano as the 2025 API Legislative Caucus Honoree during #AAPIHeritageMonth2025.
Dr. Komoto has dedicated over four decades to advancing healthcare in Delano and Kern County. Alongside his wife, Mary, he co-founded the Komoto Family Foundation and the Affordable Meds Program, which has helped patients save more than $5 million in prescription costs and copays.
A respected healthcare leader, Dr. Komoto is also a past president of the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA). His legacy continues through his son, Dr. Kevin Komoto, who serves as CPhA’s current president.
Every woman, I repeat, every woman of every age, every color, every political affiliation should condemn this, should raise their voice about this, should be terrified about this. Just a few short months ago women’s health advocates were optimistic for the first time in generations, today we should be alarmed. Women’s health research cannot afford to be cancelled like this, our lives are on the line.

If you are pro-competition, why do your biggest members do everything possible to prevent brand manufacturers from offering rebates through @costplusdrugs like they do your members ?
Why do you threaten to remove them from formularies if they deal with us ?
Answer: you know that our 15 pct markups would collapse your margins on brand name meds. Just like we have down for specialty generics and biosimilars.
You know that we would save taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. Because you know that plan premiums would drop as competitors used our pricing instead of yours.
Patient co-insurance and out of pocket would drop as well.
Hey @elonmusk , I got your @doge savings right here.
CVS Pharmacy merged with Caremark (PBM - middleman) then acquired Aetna an insurance company to form the golden trifecta of vertical integration. Caremark their PBM facilitates over 20% of all the prescriptions filled in America.
By controlling reimbursements in over 1 out of every 5 prescriptions in America they've been able to underpay competitors (independents, Walgreens, etc.) and overpay themselves to grow exponentially. The persistent underwater reimbursements have led to the closure of thousands of independent pharmacies and as we've seen lately Walgreens as well.
It's not a coincidence that right after Walgreens was acquired by a private equity firm and closed hundreds of stores, that CVS unveils the final chapter of their plan. Now with so many pharmacies having closed, they will move into those areas and put in their own mini pop-up pharmacies.
CVS is an oligopoly that controls the majority of the market. Once they're in control of these rural areas in our country where they assisted in forcing independents to close, who will stop them from doing whatever they want? Limiting access to healthcare, overcharging prices, poor customer service, etc. There will be zero accountability and no one to compete against them.
Healthcare overall has suffered tremendously due to the corrupt practices of PBMs and will continue to do more damage with this move. When will congress step up do something?
