Around 80.5% of asylum seekers from North African countries, primarily Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, have been accused of one or more crimes in Switzerland. The figure compares with 12.5% among asylum seekers overall.

Around 99% of asylum applications from these North African countries are ultimately rejected.

The government now wants criminal offenders removed more quickly. State Secretariat for Migration spokesman Daniel Bach said: “Criminals must leave Switzerland quickly. This is a priority of the asylum strategy.”
