Here’s the final @nytimes sports section written and produced by the NYT’s sports department, which our company has closed. I started working in the section 19-1/2 years ago, and this moment is breaking my heart.
@MM08ZZZ I did the London to Istanbul route solo in 2018. Scariest part was the nearly deserted platform at Dimitrovgrad at 1 a.m. hoping the Turkish train showed up. It did and the conductor served juice and cookies. Then the Turkish border cops asked my opinion of DTrump.
@MarmadukeMcAwe Yes, we'll be doing a night train from Budapest to Bucharest and then catching the Sofia-Istanbul train in Dimitrovgrad the following night.....if there's any room for us 😬 there was no way to pre book the last sleeper, have to buy tickets when we get to the station! 🤞🏼
A refreshed Tower of London display about Britain’s crown jewels includes an admission that the controversial Koh-i-Noor diamond has a long history as “a symbol of conquest.” https://t.co/ftxWL6Yfvi
Today is a national holiday in Bulgaria to celebrate the alphabet and writing (as I learned when the International Booker went to a Bulgarian book last night) https://t.co/aQSWZ9JCOs More such holidays please!
I liked the little station stop partway through the trip with its tiny gift shop selling #retro posters and some non-Harry Potter knickknacks. I hope it’s still there.
This train is full - some places available to buy on the day as I did, but both daily services fully booked way ahead for online sales. A massive tourism success for the West Highlands. Seems I may be the only Englishman on board…
