VP Vance is right: President Trump did not say he wanted to install Prince Reza Pahlavi and that is a good thing. Iranians can choose their leader, they don’t need a US-installed puppet, and millions of them have called Pahlavi’s name.
The United States should not be in the business of installing leaders in other countries for a variety of reasons, specially because Washington has a poor track record. From Iraq and Afghanistan to Venezuela, US-installed leaders have often been corrupt, incompetent, and unpopular.
That is why any US effort to install the IRGC veteran Bagher Ghalibaf or anyone else as Iran’s new dictator would be reckless and harmful.
What Iranians are asking is not for Washington to choose their leader. They are asking the United States not to enrich their murderers.

To me one of the most important things said by President Trump today is that it is his desire to expand the Abraham Accords, bringing historic stability and prosperity to the Middle East.
President Trump is correct in his analysis that this can only be achieved if the region believes Iran has been weakened or Iran has changed its behavior in terms of being a disruptive force and supporting terrorist organizations.
I sincerely hope the upcoming negotiations to forever foreclose Iran’s nuclear ambitions are a success. Due to President Trump’s actions, it is clear to me Iran and its proxies are incredibly weakened and their ability to generate another October 7 doesn’t exist, and there has been a major setback in their nuclear capability.
The ultimate win for taking on Iran is to open up a pathway to peace through Abraham Accord expansion and build on regional integration.
If the conflict with Iran yields this outcome, it will be one of the most successful military operations in American history.
Mr. President, you are right to keep your eye on the big prize: regional integration and lasting peace.
This morning, I met with @EmilyThornberry Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, and other members of the Committee to discuss the situation inside Iran, the Islamic Republic’s repression of the Iranian people, and the urgent need to place the people of Iran at the centre of UK policy.
I made clear that dealing with a regime that murdered more than 40,000 Iranians in January is not only morally wrong, but strategically misguided.
Any agreement that preserves this regime or its remnants will fail. The Iranian people will not accept it.
With or without international support, the people of Iran will overthrow this regime. Freedom will come to Iran.
As it signs a Memorandum of Understanding for “peace”, the Islamic Republic just executed two more protesters from January 8th and 9th.
This is the consequence of making a deal with this criminal regime. To do a deal with a regime that murdered more than 40,000 protestors in two days in January is morally wrong and strategically misguided.
Dealing with this regime will fail and we will all face the consequences. The regime’s 47-year war against the Iranian people continues. Just as it has never made peace with its own citizens, it will never truly make peace with the world.
The international community should back the people of Iran’s fight for freedom. Put them center in any negotiations and in their Iran policy. But let me be clear - with or without international support - this regime will fall. The people of Iran will liberate themselves from tyranny.
