Nisha Patel almost brushed it off. A thorough exam changed everything. 💙

Patel, a physician with Sutter West Bay Medical Group, was preparing for another pregnancy when her OB-GYN and colleague, Dr. Iram Zubair, also with Sutter West Bay Medical Group, discovered a high-grade precancerous lesion that could progress to cancer if left untreated.

After surgery, Patel was cleared to try again for the second child she and her husband had hoped for. Months later, Dr. Zubair was there for another milestone: caring for Patel throughout her pregnancy and helping welcome her healthy baby girl at Sutter’s CPMC Van Ness Campus.

“I feel so lucky that she caught it,” Patel said. “We’re just so grateful to be parents.”

Growing up, Warsan Ali often served as a bridge between her Somali immigrant family and the healthcare system, helping loved ones navigate a system where they didn’t always feel understood, seen or heard. 💙

Those experiences showed Ali how important a physician’s role can be in explaining, supporting and helping establish trust in medicine.

Now, Ali is beginning medical school at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science as a Sutter Health Scholar, with a full scholarship helping her pursue that vision without the burden of medical school debt.

“I want people to feel listened to, seen and believed,” Ali said. “I want to be the kind of provider who makes patients feel like this is a collaborative effort.”
