The new UPI charge may officially be paid by merchants but will customers ultimately bear the cost?

Economist Prof. Deepanshu Mohan (@Deepanshu_1810) argues that businesses routinely pass operating expenses on to consumers. Just as some merchants add an extra charge for credit or debit card payments, he warns that UPI could now enter the same category.

He also questions the timing of the policy. The new charges take effect from October 15, coinciding with India’s peak festive shopping quarter, when middle-class and upper-middle-class households typically increase spending on groceries, consumer durables and other purchases.

Could merchants quietly increase prices or add payment charges? Why introduce the policy during the festive season? And does the decision point to deeper pressure on the government’s fiscal position?

Students, alumni and activists gathered near Lady Shri Ram College for a solidarity march following the alleged gang rape of a minor at Aastha Kunj Park, close to the college.

Those at the march describe harassment around women’s colleges as a recurring and structural problem—not an isolated incident. Students say unsafe back lanes, poorly monitored parks, catcalling and everyday harassment affect how they commute, study and move through the city.

Yogita Bhayana (@yogitabhayana), women’s rights activist and founder of People Against Rape in India (PARI), argues that India already has laws addressing violence against women but poor implementation prevents those laws from translating into justice.
She calls for coordinated action involving the government, police, public institutions and citizens, along with a fundamental change in how society views women.

Students also question why police presence increases after an incident or during a protest but fails to prevent repeated harassment in areas used by women every day.
