@mgeist I spent 2 years of my life trying to correct a broken system that was about to get destroyed. Since then so jaded I won't even engage anymore. I actually feel bad for everyone involved. What a mess.

Has the government killed the proverbial goose that laid the golden egg on cultural support? Millions lost from TikTok, Netflix, Meta, Spotify, Disney and others due largely to Canadian policy. @SwBenzie returns to the @lawbytespod podcast to discuss.

An "own goal" of epic proportions will hurt in the end, the tax payer forced to subsidize culture approved by Gov't bodies and the excellent creatives here that could be thriving globally. End result of course is everyone leaves, because it doesn't matter where you are anymore.
1/3 Among other things I work A LOT in Canadian Media events. I work A LOT on funding Canadian Content. Netflix is essentially out, TikTok is out META out, Prime, Disney etc out. All as a direct result of the CDN Government and how they went about "negotiating" with them.
Content is a global game now, and foreign companies are interested in doing business in Canada....but not at any cost. Heavy lobbying by entrenched groups fighting for relevance has literally bitten off the hand that will feed them in the future.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew wrote Industry Minister Mélanie Joly a letter requesting an urgent in-person meeting to discuss the government’s ordered shutdown of TikTok Canada — but his request has so far gone unanswered.

@LukeRdeGruchy@howardalaw@FortierMorghan No. We don't compromise with the states. Even if that was the case, this still makes zero sense. Banning the app, while worse could at least sustain argument and debate.
@howardalaw@FortierMorghan So the app is fine to keep? This decision makes no sense, CDNs have been given no explanation. It has absolutely nothing to do with Americans.
Reposting this thread I shared from back in Nov. 2024 incase everyone needs a reminder of what contributing to the entertainment eco system means... Great job so far gang... #C11
Canada's best Cultural export has entered the chat. This is not the way forward. @melaniejoly Canada's cultural entrepreneurs are not happy. This is not the way.
Weeks after weeks of hearings, demand after demand for ‘meaningful contributions’. But I guess when that meaningful contribution doesn’t land directly in their pockets, it doesn’t count. Disgusting. Just disgusting. #c11 https://t.co/xr9wCMak2W
Holy Moly. When I agree with ADISQ you know the gov has lost the plot.
"Pare says the partnership helped bring visibility to ADISQ. Last year’s gala had 6.5 million views on social media, .... she says was “unheard of” before TikTok came on board."

1/3 Terrible. Full disclosure 2 of my orgs have benefited from TikTok's support, one of the programs goes directly to support Indigenous Youth training programs and building studios in community. When we ask why, the answer is still "Trust Me Bro" and it is not good enough.
Thank you @TikTokCanada@deEyre for hosting myself and other creators last night for an incredible dinner!
I’ve been pushing Conservatives to take Tik-Tok seriously because it works!
It’s where the next generation is and where the conversation is happening.

Someone must have come up with a tally of how many sponsorship and commercial dollars from Google, Meta, TikTok, etc have disappeared from Canada in the last three years. Must be close $100 million by now.
