SSBL is dedicated to developing novel, proactive interventions for swallowing dysfunction in vulnerable older adult populations and individuals with dementia
Thanks for the tag @IEaTLab! Here’s what we’re looking forward to at DRS this year. @AgingSwallowLab and Dysphagia Rehabilitation Lab (@brttyk_phd_slp), we want to hear from you!
Consensus or FUNsensus? Some of our lab members had a mini-potluck while coming to an agreement of DIGEST scores on swallow studies. Way to go, team! 🎉
The Swallowing and Salivary Bioscience Lab hopes that you had a wonderful holiday and new year! To celebrate, we gathered together and decorated some cookies! Here’s to a year full of research, growth, and fun!
Had a wonderful dinner with our colleagues at the UW Center for Health Disparities Research while in Amsterdam. Peek at the second picture for a guest appearance from the restaurant’s dog!
Marissa Todd, one of the MS/PhD students in our lab, was recently interviewed for the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center newsletter! https://t.co/HEfHHSuqxf

We are very excited to announce our study, Swallowing Trajectories and Dysphagia Predictors in Alzheimer’s Disease (SPHERE), has been funded by the National Institute on Aging! We aim to learn more about the swallowing changes and risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Congratulations to Nicole Butz, who presented her work at the Biology 152 Poster Symposium! Her research looked at how swallowing function changes in healthy older adults.
We had a great time at the American Geriatrics Society meeting a couple weeks ago! There is so much important research being done internationally, and we were happy to spread some awareness about dysphagia.
We had several amazing posters a few weeks ago at Research Day for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. This was an excellent opportunity for us to collaborate with ADRD researchers from many other disciplines!
Joanne Yee is a first-year doctoral student in the UW Madison Clinical Investigation program. She is a speech-language pathologist and the Program Coordinator for the VA Intensive Dysphagia Treatment Program. She is passionate about implementation of best practices for dysphagia.
Meet the Swallowing and Salivary Biosciences Lab! Over the next few months, we want to introduce you to all our wonderful members. Stay tuned on Wednesdays!
Jacob Tangney is a 2nd year graduate student in the lab. He is a part of the team analyzing VFSS & he runs the social media (hi😁). His clinical interest is in the overlap of voice and swallowing disorders, and in his free time he likes to play instruments and do anything outside
Congratulations to Nicole Schaen-Heacock on her poster presentation on the age-related differences in swallow function in head and neck cancer patients prior to treatment at the UW Carbone Cancer Center Research Retreat!
Join us in giving a huge congratulations to Joanne Yee, who was recently awarded the Rick L. Bollinger Clinician of the Year Award by the Association of VA Speech-Language Pathologists! Thank you for all your amazing work, Joanne!
Congratulations to all our DRS/WDS presenters! It was so great to see so many familiar faces this year and learn about all the amazing research taking place internationally.
We are looking forward to WDS this week! Dr. Rogus-Pulia will be giving a presentation on Tuesday on Behavioral Rehabilitation of Swallowing Disorders in Patients with Neurocognitive Disorders Across the Lifespan with Dr. Hanneke Kalf
