♟️ NIGERIA’S CHESS FUTURE SHINES AS OMORUYI, EKUNKE EARN FIDE TITLES
Nigeria’s participation at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, has produced another significant milestone, with Sandra Osarugue Omoruyi and Odey Goodness Ekunke earning major FIDE titles.
Omoruyi has attained the Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title, while 14-year-old Ekunke has become a Candidate Master (CM), adding two new titled players to Nigeria’s growing chess landscape.
Ekunke finished as Nigeria’s leading performer in the Open section with 6 points from 11 games, following his historic victory at the inaugural FIDE World Amateur Rapid Chess Championship in Abuja earlier this year.
Omoruyi also delivered a strong individual performance in the Women’s event, scoring 6 points from 10 games, including six victories.
The wider Nigerian contingent also produced notable individual performances, with WIM Bridget Michael scoring 5½ points, FM Abdulrahman Akintoye 5½ points, while IM Odion Aikhoje and FM Bomo Lovet Kigigha both finished on 4½ points.
The National Sports Commission congratulates Sandra Omoruyi and Odey Goodness Ekunke on their new FIDE titles and commends the entire Team Nigeria chess contingent for it's efforts on the international stage.

At just 13, Magnus Carlsen was so skilled that he became bored during his game against grandmaster Garry Kasparov and wandered off to watch other matches while waiting.
