All this talk on rules sharking got me thinking on an opinion I want to throw out there to the #Lorcana, #mtg, #pokemon & general TCG community to chat:
🚫 Asking for do-overs in competitive sanctioned tournaments is psychologically “sharking” your opponent & it should NOT be acceptable to do.
——
😫 Directly asking to re-do an action, activate a missed trigger, draw a card, etc on *optional* triggers puts IMMENSE social pressure on many, many people who cannot say “no” in that situation. You could very well cost them a game they could have won by playing cleaner than you that day. You very well could cost them the time, money and resources they invested to be there just like you. I know you know that feeling of saying “yes” to the question, and then the outcome of the game is completely determined against you by that act of grace, and you just lost your shot at Day 2, or top cut, or even just a single win.
📏 There is deep skill expression in understanding the rules & mechanics of a game, & playing at a level so that you don’t make foundational mistakes such as forgetting a trigger or not knowing what a card does. Just this skill alone can set good players apart from the pack.
🏀 In every mainstream competitive game, you don’t get re-dos. You can’t take 3 steps in basketball without getting a whistle blown for traveling. You don’t get to say, “oh shoot I meant to stop but I forgot” or “ah shoot I tripped, I didn’t mean to do that” - you still did it, & the integrity of the game is actually upheld by you accepting your mistake & playing on, not by resetting.
🤼 Showing sportsmanship does NOT mean you have to feel pressure to put yourself in a bad position to compensate for someone else’s mistakes. Sportsmanship is realizing that you made the mistake, you accept the consequences, & you allow the opponent their right to put all their practiced hours into capitalizing on YOUR mistake.
🤝 If you make an obvious goof and your opponent, of their own volition, offers to let you re-do, then great, do what you will with that permission. But you still made that mistake yourself, they should not be punished for it, but rather rewarded for better play.
