After 10 weeks, the strike is over! We are thrilled to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement with @columbia. This is a historic moment for labor in higher ed, and it is just the beginning. We look forward to getting back to work and compensation for our back work.
Dear Undergraduates,
Your graduate instructors are at a serious threat of getting replaced and their classes canceled. This will affect them and you. We urge you to attend the Townhall on Thursday at 1PM.

Undergrads @Columbia, please sign the petition to protect grad instructors from retaliation! Admin has been making unilateral moves to cancel classes or reassign instructors—decisions that will affect both grads and undergrads. https://t.co/hz1DPtsZoy #CUonStrike
.@Columbia prides itself on the rigor of its Core Curriculum—and yet it is proceeding with plans to cancel dozens of sections of University Writing taught by striking workers, leaving hundreds of first-year undergrads without an introduction to college writing. #CUonStrike
.@edovergarat on what it's like to have an exploitative institution like @Columbia run our lives: "Comparisons with a company town fall short in depicting how horrific it can be to fall from grace with such an organism."

"Columbia’s anti-union lawyer reacted with an uncanny line toward our otherworldly demands: 'we are not even in the same universe.'"

Columbia is making good on their promise to replace striking graduate instructors of record. Tell faculty and admin to use their power to protect striking IoRs. #CUonStrike
.@Columbia is making good on its threats to replace striking workers. If you're a NYC-area adjunct and are contacted about teaching a course at Columbia this semester, please know there's a good chance you'd be replacing a striking grad instructor. #CUonStrike#AcademicTwitter
Hourly/casual student workers need protections against discrimination and all international student workers need visa protections! These protections are not afforded to hourly/casual workers in @Columbia's current proposal, despite the administration's many misleading statements.
Full recognition per the NLRB certification will afford casual workers protection from discrimination. The appellate process Provost Boyce referenced is NOT the same as neutral arbitration. #CUonStrike
We can't accept @Columbia's recognition proposal that only hourly workers who work 15 hours/week or cumulative 250 hours can be in our union. Who's to say that they won't put up even more barriers to prevent workers from reaching these arbitrary thresholds? #FairContractNow
Shaina is a Computer Science TA, hired as an hourly worker.
"If there's one thing I learned from the overenrollment [in CompSci], it's that the administration does not care about us. They are perfectly happy to let their students suffer and their TAs be overworked."
#CUonStrike
Full recognition is now or never. If we accept Columbia’s arbitrary hourly threshold, we establish a two-tier system. Why should we cut out workers already recognized by the NLRB? #CUonStrike

Columbia’s hourly threshold for recognition arbitrarily excludes workers from the unit. Full recognition per the NLRB certification would cost the university $0 For years, Columbia has engaged in union-busting tactics like this. #HoldTheLine
Student worker update: @sw_columbia is close to signing a fair contract with Columbia.
However, @Columbia is now pushing to weaken the union by artificially limiting membership.
This is union-busting—creating a class of unprotected workers to erode the size of the union.
FACT CHECK: Provost Mary Boyce claims Columbia’s position on recognition is “expansive and goes beyond what is required by the National Relations Board (NLRB).”
FALSE: The NLRB makes no mention of an hourly limit before workers are eligible for membership in the unit.
