One cannot depend upon those in "authority" to have sound knowledge and insight. Persons may have power and high position and yet be deeply confused and irrational. For an individual to have a good life, one must be a critical questioner & possess an interrogative soul. Socrates
Today, I was invited to Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
This is their student library, and this is a public university.
ASML and Philips which is Europe’s most valuable companies, originated in Eindhoven’s technology ecosystem.
Nigerian universities need to step up. This should be the minimum standard we should aim for.
We must begin building institutions that drive innovation, research, and global technological advancement.
One major difference between life in Nigeria and life in developed economies is something we don’t talk about enough:
ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE CREDIT.
In Canada, car loans can be around 6–7% per annum. Mortgages can be around 4–6%.
In the UK, new mortgages are around 4–5%.
Across the Eurozone, new housing loans are around 3–4%.
In the United States, even with today’s relatively high rates, a 30-year mortgage is around 7%.
Now come to Nigeria.
Our Central Bank policy rate is 23%, while commercial lending rates can run above 30% and, depending on the lender and borrower, considerably higher.
Then there are short-term digital lenders and informal loan sharks whose effective borrowing costs can be brutal.
Think about what this does to a society.
In developed economies, a hardworking person does not necessarily need the entire cash to buy a car, own a home, acquire equipment or build a business.
The financial system allows you to bring tomorrow’s income into today’s productivity.
You buy the house and repay over 15, 20 or 30 years.
You buy the car and repay over several years.
A business buys equipment today and pays for it from the income that equipment generates tomorrow.
That is one of the hidden infrastructures of prosperity: AFFORDABLE, LONG-TERM CREDIT.
In Nigeria, we have almost criminalised not having cash.
If you don’t have ₦50 million today, you may simply not be able to buy the ₦50 million asset, even if you have a stable income capable of paying for it over several years.
And when credit is available, the cost can be so high that the loan itself becomes the problem.
This affects everything.
Home ownership.
Transportation.
Manufacturing.
Agriculture.
Small businesses.
Education.
Technology.
Job creation.
We cannot build a productive middle class entirely on CASH AND CARRY.
A modern economy must allow responsible people to use their FUTURE INCOME to build their PRESENT PRODUCTIVITY.
Nigeria doesn’t only need more jobs.
We need a financial system that makes the income from those jobs actually capable of building wealth.
Affordable credit is not a luxury.
It is economic infrastructure.
What is this hole in my stomach? Anthony Kila is not a Professor? @PremiumTimesng entered the Michael & Cecelia Ibru University and dragged "Mr. Kila" him by the b...
I also read the response to Mr./Prof. Kila's Vanguard rebuttal and it's just as diabolical as the first piece.
A subsidy (ad infinitum) is proof that a part of your business needs to be improved upon to make the business model profitable. Otherwise it is not a business, it's a charity which is always doomed to fail once the funding stalls.
Fix the business!
My Take on Subsidy:
The end-to-end of a business (value chain) should be self-sustaining/profitable.
Subsidies should only be introduced in response to external shocks that impact the business. Once stability returns, the subsidy must be removed.
How is this hard?
According to Voltaire, when the masses get involved in reasoning, everything is lost. By this, the uneducated masses should not be allowed to vote.
I disagree! But Edo was asked to vote Asue Ighodalo, Olumide Apata, or Monday Okpebholo.
Edo people proved Voltaire right.
I don't know the back story that has inspired this but I'm equally overwhelmed with respect and admiration. @mrmacarony you will not lack capable hands, firm legs, strong shoulders and honest smiles towards an unveiling of a better you.
I cried so much last night and this morning. I have seen lots of messages from different people about things I did for them at different times most of which I don’t even remember.
The truth is I have always believed in my heart that the only reason God has given to me is to give it back.
I think this is God’s way of telling me to also be thankful!!! I have been thinking too much about what I lost instead of thanking God for seeing me through one of the hardest moments of my life.
I am used to always giving and hardly ever receiving because everyone thought I had in abundance. I have also always found it difficult to ask for help. Even if I had to borrow from anyone, I would always return with interest, even without them asking. But I was tested in ways I couldn’t understand these past few years. I asked for help everywhere and anywhere I could think of and I was on the verge of giving it all up!
I would mention his name but he would be really upset. God used one person to settle all that I owed! And this help came over and over again! I don’t think any sane person would do what he did for me without God’s intervention!
So this is me also saying thank you Brother! And I will continue to do so again and again, privately and publicly! Thank you for giving me hope when I thought it was all over. I can’t help but think I have taken your love and kindness for granted but I want you to know that I am forever indebted to you.
To my closest people in the World (Mr Macaroni & Friends) Thank you for not neglecting me even when you had every reason to. Thank you for saving me 😊
To Don Jazzy, who has been giving me since my university days up till now, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do, not just for me but for so many others!!! To my brother Victor Osimhen and Pastor Bolaji!!! Thank youuuu. 🤍
I am in a better place! I am learning and doing things that make me happy. I don’t and will never regret anything I have ever done in my life to make the lives of others better in even the smallest way possible. However, I have learned a lot of lessons these past few years and I am grateful even for the trials and tribulations for which without them I wouldn’t have the clarity of mind I now have.
May the love in our hearts be forever greater than the hate in the world.
Thank you with all my heart. 🤍

"We are certainly all not infrequently like madmen, but with the slight difference that the deranged are somewhat madder, for we must draw a line. A normal man, it is true, hardly exits." - Fyodor Dostoevsky
The play on words, oh my. Revered as a classic for a reason. Doffs hat.
However, as wishes are not horses, when Tinubu returns elected, please make Nyesom Wike the Minister of Power. His potential and capacity is beyond "Minister of FCT."
That man works hard and gets the job done. God sparing his life, he'll make one helluva Minister of Power.
If wishes were horses:
- Sowore: Speaker House of Reps.
- Adebayo: Senate President
- Duke: Minister of Foreign Affairs.
- Tinubu & Atiku: Guest lecturers in every Tertiary institution in Nigeria with a Political Science department.
- Nigeria would do right by (Eastern) Nigeria.
I'm gobsmacked. That decision almost ruined the entire wedding. Imagine the dream of giving your daughter away dashed by some ...sigh. I'm seriously restraining myself from exploring if shrines and mirrors in calabashes still work because someone has definitely earned a curse.
@DavidHundeyin My man! 2023, the year that was and strongly featured the absolute, one and only enfant terrible. Stay awesome, my good man. You put in the intellectual work and rare boldness to match. Stay safe, keep writing.
The insult. You go to apply for a US visa to attend your only daughter's wedding and get denied? Denied?
The passport is laden stamped from multiple travels to England, France, Canada, and even the US!
Who makes these decisions? Forget empathy, where is common sense?
