@heydrhisham @ClementLeeMD Unfair right? a lot of Drs are underpaid and overworked. Even in my country. Drs are quitting every day but in general, life is difficult. Selling burgers is difficult too. At least we’re able to change the lives of our patients & it helps us sleep better @ night.

HKL's emergency department is losing about 40 medical officers to MOH's July 31 nationwide doctor relocation exercise, possibly triggering more resignations from increased workloads on remaining staff.

The relocations include 15 trained MOs, plus over 20 "floating" MOs (MOs who just completed their housemanship) who were relocated earlier in June.

The ED at HKL is among the country's largest and busiest, with up to 10 emergency zones, including two Red Zones for critical cases, observation rooms, extension wards, and isolation rooms for critically ill patients awaiting ICU beds.

As HKL is Malaysia's premier tertiary referral centre, an HKL doctor says it's "impossible" to reduce services despite a smaller workforce. Ongoing renovations have already compelled the MOH hospital to operate at half capacity.

“We take referrals from every state, so it is not possible for us to shut down or reduce any of the services,” says Dr Daniel (pseudonym).

“The only option we have, instead of cutting services, is to increase the workload on existing staff – and this will only lead to more burnouts and staff resignations, and patients will experience even longer waiting times than they already do.”

Although HKL overall across departments is losing a whopping 300 MOs to the July 31 relocation and getting 100 incoming MOs (net loss of 200 doctors), priority for these 100 incoming MOs will likely go to the "dying" medical department.

“The turnover rate at the medical department is very high, with one to two medical officers leaving per day, including those who quit, because the work burden is very high," says Dr Daniel.
