A bill banning gene-based vaccines, like some forms of the COVID-19 vaccine, received approval from a Senate subcommittee Monday.

Senate File 360 would prohibit health care providers from administering gene-based vaccines, with penalties of a misdemeanor charge and a fine of $500 for each violation, as well as requiring a review of the provider’s license. Gene-based vaccines are those using nucleic acids like messenger RNA (mRNA), creating proteins in order to trigger an immune response.

While mRNA vaccines have been in research development for decades, the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna were the first of this kind of vaccine to gain approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

There is still no long term safety data on these products. What potential genetic effects could emerge from the use of these vaccines? Where do genetic materials end up traveling to in the body? What unintended autoimmune responses might occur?

These are just a few of the many questions that don't yet have an answer yet several studies have shown reason for concern.

Jessica Highland, executive director of the Iowa Biotechnology Association, says there are Iowa companies doing research on M-R-N-A vaccines for both humans and animals. “We would just urge you not to be the first state in the country to pass legislation like this,” she said. “We think this still needs to be an option for patients and for the future.”

It's likely there would be less tension around the issue of mRNA products if there was a more open and transparent dialogue about the concerns that various people in the scientific and medical community have. Instead, we see censorship and ridicule, which only further fuels divides. This is also having a heavy effect on the loss in critical thinking as issues become about identity and stance vs facts and synthesis.
