Edna Lewis was born on April 13, 1916, in Freetown, Virginia. She learned how to cook from formerly enslaved people, including her grandfather, who helped establish the Freetown community in Orange County, VA. She wrote or co-wrote four cookbooks... 1/3
including “The Edna Lewis Cookbook” (1972), based heavily on her learned cooking expertise. We have just acquired two of Lewis's cookbooks for our collections. She is one of the first southern Black women to publish a cookbook under her own name... 2/3
