When I got out of college, I had student loans and lived paycheck to paycheck, wondering when I'd have a few bucks left over.

I began to make a bit more and finally had a few dollars left over for breathing room at the end of the month, but I wanted to start socking some dough away.

Instead, I got married, upgraded our cars, and found a way to get a mortgage. And just like that, I was house poor and savings was a pipe dream.

My income increased, but then came the kids. Karate lessons, sports fees, and my daughter excelled at gymnastics, forcing me to finance her meets all across the country, even a few internationally. I was again gasping for air.

As they grew, so did the education expenses, and any additional income I made went to those three big ticket bills. I continued to tread water despite making more money.

They all graduated with honors and went on to postgrad degrees with one a software developer, another getting her medical degree, and the last a lawyer.

All three are not only whip smart but they're truly amazing human beings. I'm finally rich, and money had nothing to do with it. I wish I knew that all along.
