England's insane window tax of 1696 gives us a preserved specimen of government logic: tax something visible, watch people wall it up, then call the resulting darkness a private choice.

William III needed money. His solution was a property levy scaled to the number of windows in your home. Fewer than ten windows meant a flat two shillings. More than twenty meant you paid serious money. Simple enough. Except that people responded rationally. They bricked up their windows. Landlords across England built housing with deliberately minimal openings to dodge the threshold counts. You got darker rooms, worse ventilation, and richer tax collectors.

The tax ran from 1696 to 1851. One hundred and fifty-five years of government successfully making buildings worse.

This as a textbook case of how taxation reshapes behavior rather than merely funding government. The tax did not collect a neutral slice of existing wealth. It changed the physical structure of buildings across an entire nation. Workers lived in dimmer, damper homes. Tuberculosis rates in urban areas were brutal throughout the 18th century, and poor ventilation was a documented contributor.

Parliament finally repealed it in 1851 after physicians publicly connected sunlight deprivation to disease. Economists, not physicians, should have made this case first, but the market already knew what people wanted. Glass. Light. Air. The state spent a century and a half taxing those things into scarcity. Daylight robbery.

Vuodesta 2021 lähtien Suomen poliisin tietoon tulleissa pahoinpitelyissä epäillyn yleisin ikä on Tilastokeskuksen mukaan ollut 14 vuotta. Toiseksi yleisin ikä vuonna 2025 oli 13 ja kolmanneksi yleisin 15 vuotta.

Alle 15-vuotiaiden tekemiksi epäiltyjen rikosten kasvutahti on ollut hurja.

Tilastokeskuksen mukaan esimerkiksi vuonna 2015 alle 15-vuotiaiden osuus kaikista epäillyistä oli vajaat 4 %, kun vuonna 2025 osuus oli jo reilut 15 %.

Vuonna 2025 Suomessa epäiltiin pahoinpitelyrikoksista yhteensä 4 714:ää alle 15-vuotiasta henkilöä. Epäillyistä 30,1 % oli ulkomaalaistaustaisia. Tilastokeskuksen mukaan ulkomaalaistaustaisten osuus pahoinpitelyrikoksista epäillyissä oli suurin nimenomaan alle 15-vuotiaiden ikäryhmässä.

Alle 15-vuotiaiden ulkomaalaistaustaisten tekemiksi epäillyissä pahoinpitelyissä on lisäksi vahva maantieteellinen painotus. Epäillyistä yli puolet oli taustaltaan Lähi-idästä ja Saharan eteläpuolisesta Afrikasta.

Ulkomaalaistaustaisten osuus alle 15-vuotiaiden epäillyistä ryöstörikoksista oli 45 %. Myöskin ryöstöstä epäillyistä ulkomaalaistaustaisista yli puolet oli taustaltaan Lähi-idästä ja Saharan eteläpuolisesta Afrikasta.

• Tony Fauci, Francis Collins ja Jeremy Farrar koordinoivat mediastrategiaa, jonka tarkoituksena oli heikentää laboratoriovuotoa koskevien keskustelujen uskottavuutta. Sähköpostit osoittavat, että he työskentelivät kulissien takana mustamaalaten ja vaientamalla kaikki, jotka kyseenalaistivat virallisen tarinan.

• Kristian Andersen, Robert Garry ja Eddie Holmes suunnittelivat, miten harhauttaa New York Timesin toimittajaa Donald McNeil Jr:ta varmistaakseen, ettei hän kaivautuisi liian syvälle laboratoriovuoto-teoriaan.

• Andersenin, Garryn, Holmesin, Andrew Rambautin ja W. Ian Lipkinin laatima surullisenkuuluisa ”Proximal Origin” -artikkeli koronaviruksen alkuperästä oli koordinoitu yritys harhauttaa yleisöä. Yksityisistä viesteistä kävi ilmi, että he uskoivat viruksen vuotaneen laboratoriosta, ei pelkästään mahdollisesti, vaan todennäköisesti. He kuitenkin kielsivät sen julkisesti.

• Peter Daszak ja EcoHealth Alliance auttoivat peittelemään Wuhanin virologian instituutin tekoja, vaikka tiesivät, että sen riskialtis virusten toiminnallisuuden tehostamista koskeva tutkimus olisi voinut aiheuttaa epidemian.

• Shi Zhenglin johtamassa Wuhanin laboratoriossa oli löyhiä turvallisuusmenettelyjä – silti he odottivat yleisön uskovan, että vuoto olisi mahdoton.

Ja nyt, vuosien ”salaliittoteoreetikoiden” mustamaalaamisen ja panettelun jälkeen, The New York Times myöntää, että niin sanotut ”salaliittoteoreetikot” olivatkin oikeassa.

Rome handed out free grain to 40,000 citizens in 73 BC. By 46 BC, Julius Caesar found 320,000 people lining up for their monthly ration. That eight-fold expansion happened in under three decades, and it shows you how welfare states actually grow.

No Roman senator stood up and announced a plan to addict a third of the city to government bread. It happened incrementally, through political competition. Each magistrate who wanted votes expanded eligibility. Each expansion normalized the next one. The citizen who once considered the dole shameful eventually expected it, then demanded it, then organized politically to protect it.

This is the core mechanism free market thinkers have identified across every era: once you create a transfer program, you create a constituency for that program. Recipients vote. Administrators build careers. Grain merchants who supply the state develop a stake in keeping the contracts flowing. The political economy locks in.

Caesar, to his credit, actually cut the rolls back to 150,000 through verification audits. It was one of his more economically coherent moves, though the Senate still murdered him. His successors quietly let the numbers climb again.

What did the dole require? Massive grain imports from Sicily, Sardinia, and Egypt, organized through state logistics at state expense, funded by taxation and conquest. When the conquest revenue dried up, the obligation remained. Rome had written a check against future military success, and future military success eventually failed to arrive.

The lesson is not complicated. Distribute a benefit and you distribute dependency. Distribute dependency and you distribute political power to whoever controls the distribution. The grain dole didn't weaken Rome overnight, but it made every subsequent reform politically impossible.

Female genital mutilation is affecting tens of thousands of women in France, with a study estimating that 7.2% of women aged 18–45 in Seine-Saint-Denis, the heavily multicultural department surrounding northeastern Paris, have undergone the practice.

That represents roughly 22,500 women in Seine-Saint-Denis alone, while the upper range of the study's estimate approaches 10%, potentially as many as one in ten women in the age group.

The prevalence is dramatically higher among women originating from countries where FGM remains widespread. Around 24% of women studied in Seine-Saint-Denis came from high-prevalence countries, particularly Mali, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Guinea, and roughly 30% of women in this group had undergone FGM.

Across France, estimates suggest between 125,000 and 139,000 women are living with the consequences of genital mutilation.

French authorities have also documented cases involving girls raised in France being taken to their families' countries of origin during vacations and returning after undergoing FGM.

The practice is illegal in France and can be prosecuted even when performed abroad on minors living in the country. It can cause severe bleeding, infections and even death, as well as lifelong chronic pain, sexual problems, complications during pregnancy and childbirth, and psychological trauma.
