Kate O’Hare-Palmer, a true American hero who served as a U.S. Army nurse during the Vietnam War, joined the Army Nurse Corps at 21. She was inspired by her parents' WWII service and her brother Tom's Vietnam tour.

Arriving in-country on June 8, 1968—at the height of U.S. casualties—she was assigned to the 2nd Surgical Hospital, working 12-hour shifts, six days a week in field hospitals at Lai Khe and Chu Lai.

O’Hare-Palmer dodged enemy fire while treating the war's worst horrors: severe head and chest wounds, amputations, and soldiers beyond saving. Overwhelmed by the casualty volume, she compartmentalized emotions, becoming "Robot Katie."

After 14 months, she returned with PTSD, later earning a nutrition degree from UC Berkeley and working in VA hospitals. Now 79, she's chair of the Vietnam Veterans of America National Women Veterans Committee, advocating for women vets. Named Sonoma County Veteran of the Year in 2018, she's featured in "Vietnam War Portraits."
