For the first time since he was stabbed during mass, Bishop Mar Mari has talked about the terrorist attack.

Assyrians were driven out of the East & have now been targeted in multiple high-profile attacks in the West because of the zeal of their Christianity.

"I pray the whole world comes back to Jesus Christ because there is only one God & his name is JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH."

There were over 1.5 million Assyrians in Iraq alone & there are now less than 200,000 in the country driven by the Iraq War & the rise of ISIS.

They have large diaspora communities where they continue their ancient faith. Like @BruceSaiFun, Mar Mari is one of the most viral Christians on the internet.

The Bishop survived the attempt on his life.

Assyrians are a unique and indigenous people living in present-day Turkey and the wider Middle East. They have endured severe persecution in those lands, including a genocide in 1915.

If Turkey was a civilized state, then it would at least recognize cultural autonomy for Assyrians in parts of Tur Abdin (southeast Turkey). It would help them preserve their language, religion, and cultural heritage.

According to a UN report, over 90 Christian sites were damaged or destroyed by ISIS in Iraq.

The first image I'm attaching is an aerial view of Iraq's oldest monastery dynamited by ISIS in 2014.

The Monastery of St Elijah dated back to the 6th century. ܕܝܪܐ ܕܡܪܝ ܐܝܠܝܐ

They blew up Churches & used them as firing ranges.
They desecrated relics & burnt Aramaic manuscripts.

Christian history that will never be recovered in its original form.

Another Monastery ISIS erased was the Syriac Monastery of Mar Behnam near the ancient site of Nimrud. ܕܝܪܐ ܕܡܪܝ ܒܗܢܡ

The site was founded by an Assyrian King & was a timeless symbol of the Mesopotamian tapestry. It contained inscriptions in Syriac, Arabic, Armenian and even Uyghur (left by the raiding Mongols in the 12th century).

Also blown to smithereens, but gracefully restored by a French NGO in 2018 (@FraterniteIrak).

There are details of this history that will never be recovered completely, but it can be documented, restored and even rebuilt in some form.

Christians need to fight hard to protect & restore their heritage in the Near East just like other religions do.

Before it is too late.

A beautiful photograph capturing a generation of **Assyrian Christian children in Baghdad** and preserving the memory of a community with deep roots in Mesopotamia. 🏛️❤️

The Assyrians are an **indigenous people of Mesopotamia**, whose history and cultural heritage reach back thousands of years. Through centuries of change, they have preserved their Christian faith,language, traditions and identity. ✝️📜

But modern Assyrian history has also been filled with tragedy and displacement. During **Seyfo — the Assyrian Genocide of 1915**, Assyrian communities in the Ottoman Empire suffered mass killings, deportations and the destruction of villages and churches. 🕯️

In **1933**, Assyrians in Iraq suffered another terrible tragedy in the **Simele Massacre**, when Iraqi army forces and irregular Kurdish armed groups attacked Assyrian communities in northern Iraq. Thousands were reported killed, although historical estimates vary. In **1969**, Assyrian civilians were again killed in the village of **Sorya**, another painful event remembered by the community. 💔

After **2003**, Iraqi Christians faced a new wave of violence. Al-Qaeda-linked and other Islamic extremist groups attacked churches and Christian communities, while kidnappings and killings forced many families to leave Baghdad, Mosul and other parts of Iraq. ⛪🕯️

Then, in **2014, ISIS captured Mosul and swept across the Nineveh Plains**, forcing thousands of Assyrian Christians to flee their ancestral towns and villages. Ancient churches, monasteries, homes and cultural sites were damaged, destroyed or desecrated.

Before 2003, Iraq's Assyrian Christian population was commonly estimated at around **1.5 million**. Today, only a fraction remain, while many Assyrians have rebuilt their lives in the **United States, Europe, Australia and elsewhere around the world**. 🌍

Yet despite genocide, massacres, persecution and displacement, the Assyrian people continue to survive and preserve their heritage. 🕊️

This 1964 classroom photograph is therefore more than an old picture. It is a reminder of a community that was once a much more visible part of Baghdad and Iraq — and of an ancient people who continue to carry their **faith, language, culture and Mesopotamian identity** into the future. 💙🤍❤️
