Pune: Khadakwasla Dam Discharge Increased; Water Enters Riverside Homes, Residents Put On Alert

Pune, July 8, 2026: Continuous heavy rainfall in the Khadakwasla dam catchment has led to a sharp rise in the reservoir's water level, prompting authorities to increase the discharge into the Mutha River. The release has resulted in water entering several riverside homes, with residents in low-lying areas being placed on high alert.

According to the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, the dam's discharge was increased by 14,393 cusecs at 3.45 am on Wednesday, taking the total release into the Mutha River to 22,880 cusecs. Officials warned that the discharge may be further increased or reduced depending on rainfall in the catchment area, raising the possibility of sudden flooding along the river.

The administration has advised citizens to avoid entering the riverbed under any circumstances. Residents have also been asked to immediately move livestock, agricultural produce and other belongings to safer locations. Authorities have appealed to people living in low-lying areas along the Mutha River to remain vigilant and relocate to safer places if required.

The increased discharge has already affected several neighbourhoods. Water entered homes in Ekta Nagari, parts of Shivane, Bhimnagar, and Kondhwe Dhawade, causing concern among residents.

Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure conducted an early morning inspection of flood-affected areas along the river, visiting Rajput Slum, Pulachiwadi, Ekta Nagari, and Nimbajanagar to assess the situation and review relief measures.

The administration has urged residents across Pune, particularly those living near the Mutha River, to remain alert as continued rainfall may lead to further changes in the dam's discharge over the coming days.
