@sampladelica Yeah I’ve had a couple people seem overly concerned that I have pothos. I’m not eating it, I wash my hands after handling plants, and it’s not being accessed by pets or small children. I’m glad people are aware, but I’m keeping my plants, no one is in danger.

@californiabarby Yes. People seem to forget the outcome is dependent on climate. I live someplace where these deaths are rarer because it’s not super hot. People in Phoenix or SoCal aren’t more evil, we make the same mistakes here, they just have a lot less room for error.

@metamacky @dannarebb It’s mostly because of climate, and we are more car-dependent. More people live in hot places in the US, with months of temps over 30°C, than live in the UK altogether. Our colder states have like one death per decade.

@offbeatorbit Yeah it’s sad some people refuse to learn anything about this, it just puts more kids at risk. When they get angry at the idea of reading about it, they seem very scared that they might learn they’re fallible too.

@alittleleader Not a lawyer, I work in energy policy/regulation, but occasionally someone does this. Quiz me on litigation in some state or issue area I don’t work in. Cool to ask if I know about it, just don’t act like I’m not doing my job if I’m not passionately involved in your pet issue.

If it’s not and it’s about building the friendship generally, instead say “ask them to do something, I think they’d like that, they haven’t seen you in a while.”

@prettycritical I agree, I think that specific thing is not always feasible. But certainly would be socially savvy to suggest another joint activity. Or try to have a word with the other friend if you know there’s maybe been a misunderstanding or harsh reaction like the bday vs. funeral thing.

@lilgrapefruits Feel like it happened recently with the POV video of a girl that rudely replies to your friendly small talk. People creating any possible reason why that behavior is good and the viewer must be the mean one. Usually the viewer is intended to be the sympathetic, relatable side?!

@Silent_4ngel We can say that about anything. Want to improve society? Don’t even speak about it, it’s easier to never try.

Self-hatred has negative effects and can be isolating too. Conventional beauty isn’t the one path to community, and most of us can’t attain it or it won’t last forever.

@PollTracker2024 States all have different laws and Wisconsin has no automatic recount. If she’s within 0.25, she can request a recount AND the state will pay for it. Realistically it’s likely not worth requesting unless it’s below 0.1.
