“In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.”

Marc Andreessen did traditional media from 1994 to 2017 and said 90% of the time it worked fine. Then something changed in 2017 and he believes it is structurally permanent. He now tells every founder in his portfolio the same thing.
For over two decades, the press and Silicon Valley had a functional relationship. Reporters wanted to explain what tech was building. Founders wanted people to understand it. The incentives lined up.
Then they didn't.
Marc's view is that around 2017, the second mission of legacy journalism speak truth to power, afflict the comfortable fully swamped the first one. Objective reporting became activist reporting. The interaction changed.
He is not describing a rough patch or a pendulum that swings back. He thinks the incentive structure is now permanently broken for anyone building something in tech.
His exact advice to every founder in his portfolio: there is no way to get to anything resembling a story you are going to like through traditional media anymore. You can land a single story. You cannot run a strategy.
A Reuters Institute report found that trust in news has fallen in 46 out of 50 countries tracked since 2017. The audience figured it out before the founders did.
The people who still believe the relationship is fixable are spending money on PR firms and pitching the right reporter. Marc watched that work for 23 years. He watched it stop working in one.
Every founder still waiting for fair coverage is solving a problem that no longer exists.
