Do you like parrots?
Well so do women on the Venezuelan island of Macanao.
So much so, that large numbers of them take parrots as pets, aiding loneliness in communities and often thinking that this helps protect the parrots from life in the wild. [thread 1/3] @Volando_Juntos_
[2/3]
Unfortunately, this practice is having drastic impacts on local parrot populations.
So, Dr. Ada Sánchez-Mercado of UNSW started Provita, which investigated this practice and engaged communities to effect positive change.

From the stunning succulent garden, the fab fernery and the eel in the duck pond we got to see so many natural wonders. We even got to meet a native bee!

(3/3) As for my favourite conservation news source, I am really enjoying all the cute animal videos (and research!) coming from the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s TikTok account (we’re mutuals 📷).
Stay tuned for more! #earthday#earthoptimism#conservation#scb
Earth Optimism Series #6: A little bit from each of our team about who we are, and what we're positive about with regards to conservation and the environment, next up is our Treasurer, Zoe Xirocostas! @zoexiro
(2/3) I am currently Treasurer and member-at-large at Sydney SCB and I formerly held the Presidential role a few years ago. Something that gives me hope is the amazing groundwork that young activists are taking to secure the future of our planet.
(2/2) I’m optimistic that our food systems can become more biodiverse and help conserve local species. I love Sam Bentley on instagram, he shares positive and uplifting news on sustainability, conservation, the environment, and overall good optimistic news about the world! #scb
Earth Optimism Series #5: A little bit from each of our team about who we are, and what we're positive about with regards to conservation and the environment, next up is one of our Social Media Managers, Izumi Kageyama!
Check out the thread below!
(1/2) Hi! I’m Izumi and I’m one of the new social media managers of SCB Sydney. The conservation biology field I’m particularly interested in is terrestrial plants and animals, especially in agricultural settings.
